Pronunciation
[edit]Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Pronunciation states "For English words and names, pronunciation should normally be omitted for common words or when obvious from the spelling". Derby, Tasmania is pronounced the same way it is spelt, so the pronunciation should not be on the page. Kind regards, JJK2000 (talk) 14:01, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
Well, if you read carefully WP:Engvar and the edit summary of the W:ADMIN you reverted - it is not as straight forward as that JarrahTree 14:05, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
- @JJK2000: I am well aware of what that page says, and you mentioned it repeatedly in your edit comments. I gave my reasoning in the summary – many Australian towns are named after British ones, so it is entirely worth noting that the Tasmanian and WA locations are not pronounced in the same way as Derby, so it could be said that the Australian towns are "names with counterintuitive pronunciation" (as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Pronunciation). In addition, the word "Derby" (as a name or other terms such as "derby match") are pronounced differently in British and American English, so there is no "direct contravention" of WP:MOSPRON and it's not as simple/cut-and-dried as you claim, just because these pronunciations seem to match the phonetic spelling. You made a bold edit, that's fine, other editors disagreed, we're now in the "discuss" part of the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle so I suggest you raise the topic (at WP:AWNB or Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Pronunciation) and gain consensus for your edit rather than edit-warring, and throwing rules at experienced editors. --Canley (talk) 14:16, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
- I've only just noticed this discussion. Please see my edit summary at Derby, Western Australia; I tried to make a similar revert at this page too but I was beaten to it. Graham87 14:25, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
