16-08-2019: Response to proposed deletion
[edit]I appreciate the comments by Nsk92 regarding the proposed deletion of this article but I would be interested in understanding why this article is regarded as being less notable than the 84 other entries that come under the category of "Departments of the University of Oxford", none of which appear to have been flagged for deletion. Being one of the oldest Geology/Earth Sciences departments in the world and due to its association with some of the most influential and well-known geologists in history, I think that this article is entirely justified. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BeaufortGyre (talk • contribs)
- Individual university departments are generally not considered notable, per WP:NOTINHERITED principle, and Wikipedia usually does not have separate articles about such departments. There are exceptions, particularly in case of older universities, like Oxford, but they still need to be justified on a case-by-case basis, rather than by arguing that many other departments in the same university have separate articles about them. (See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS.) More specifically, an article would need to include references by independent (from Oxford) sources providing specific and detailed coverage of the department itself, as explained in WP:ORG. E.g. journal or newspaper articles about the department and its history, or some coverage of this kind in some books, etc. I am not seeing any references of this type currently cited in the article.
