Third paragraph on Personal life section on the article. How is that wiki material? Govvy (talk) 16:37, 24 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

think there is quite a bit in the info supplied by family and management that is not wiki material. E.g., "His first touch in professional football was a backheel".46.7.195.132 (talk) 18:00, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dele Alli position

[edit]

Is Alli a midfielder or a forward? He's been playing second striker and that's considered a forward Theoageodwikisfixier (talk) 14:02, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

More an attacking midfielder, but if you look at his overall play and position it's midfield and not a forward. Govvy (talk) 14:17, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

First paragraph amendments - updated information received from his management/parents

[edit]

Bamidele Jermaine "Dele" Alli (born 11 April 1996) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team.

Alli was born and raised in Milton Keynes to a Nigerian father and an English mother. Dele joined the academy system at Milton Keynes Dons aged 12 and broke into the first team five years later, during the 2012–13 season. Over the next two-and-a-half years he made 88 official appearances for the team, scoring 24 goals. He signed to Tottenham Hotspur 22 in February 2015 for an initial fee of £5 million, being loaned back to the Dons for the remainder of the season. In his first full campaign at White Hart Lane, Alli was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year. In January 2016 he was ranked 8th in the Gazzetta dello Sport list of the 50 best U20 footballers and in October of the same year he was ranked as the best U21 talent in world football by FourFourTwo.[1][2]

Early Career amendments - update received from his management/parents

[edit]

Alli started began his football career with  the local team Milton Keynes Dons and later joined the youth academy system at Milton Keynes Dons when he was 12 years old.

He made his debut for the first team as a sixteen-year-old on 2 November 2012, coming on as a 64th-minute substitute for Jay O'Shea in a 0–0 draw with Southern Football League club Cambridge City in the FA Cup first round at Milton Road.

His first touch in professional football was a back-heeled pass. His first goal came in the replay against Cambridge eleven days later, where he scored in a 6–1 win at Stadium MK on his first start.

He made his league debut in the 2–3 defeat to Coventry City at home on 29 December, where he played 71 minutes before being replaced by Zeli Ismail. His only other league appearance in the 2012–13 Football League One season, came as a second-half substitute for Patrick Bamford in the last game of the season, a 2–0 win over Stevenage at Broadhall Way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DarrenMN2S (talkcontribs) 17:23, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life amendments - update received from management/parents

[edit]

Alli was born and raised in UK town Milton Keynes to a Nigerian father Kehinde Alli [3] and English mother Denise.[4] and English mother Denise Fitch. Alli spent his early years with his father both in England, Milton Keynes, and in Nigeria where he attended Avi-Cenna International School in Lagos, Nigeria’s capital city.

Alli returned to England because of his passion for football; his father says this was the hardest decision he has ever had to make.

Alli also attended Stantonbury Campus[5] and The Radcliffe School in Wolverton.

Alli supported Chelsea growing up and Liverpool as a teenager with England players Steven Gerrard, Jason Puncheon and Yaya Touré being his childhood idols[6][unreliable source?]. Liverpool’s winning season in the Champions League is one of the moments that inspired him to passionately pursue a professional career at the top level in England.

One of Dele Alli’s closest friends is Eric Dier, fellow Tottenham and England teammate; people describe their relationship as a bromance.

Explanation of above

[edit]

In case the context is not clear, I advised an individual who contacted Wikimedia that they should not directly edit the article but provide suggestions for improvement on the article talk page. Experience editors will recognize that a well-crafted requests is typically of the form "please change X to Y supported by reliable reference Z" And that is not the structure use but the section above should be viewed as requested edits.--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:01, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea what you're on about, it looks like a straight up copy from the article and I feel rather inclined to remove all of this off the talk page, clear and direct questions are preferred. Govvy (talk) 19:59, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There are changes compared to the current article. I, however, cannot be bothered to filter out all the changes from the wall of text. If the "individual" really wants to help improve the article, then I'd advise them to make suggestions in the format "please change X to Y supported by reliable reference Z" as mentioned by Sphilbrick. Robby.is.on (talk) 20:18, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The new information in this edit request is not accompanied by reliable sources for verification. For example, people describe their relationship as a bromance is too vague with respect to the term "people" and does not cite any sources describing who these "people" are. Liverpool’s winning season in the Champions League is one of the moments that inspired him to passionately pursue a professional career at the top level in England – this is very plausible, but would be best supported by a citation. Therefore, I am declining this edit request. Altamel (talk) 16:01, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The pronunciation

[edit]

What's the pronunciation of Dele Alli?? Thanks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jOi_9N6NoE&t=5s; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jymkeZCmtM&t=23s @Mr KEBAB: LoveVanPersie (talk) 10:58, 13 November 2017 (UTC) Are you online? @Mr KEBAB: LoveVanPersie (talk) 05:25, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@LoveVanPersie: It's either /ˈdɛli ˈæli/ or /ˈdɛliː-/, I'm not sure. I think it's the first one.
The ping template seems to be broken, because it's the second or third time you tried to notify me without success. From now on, use my talk page. Mr KEBAB (talk) 09:26, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't seem right to me what you put down. Govvy (talk) 11:35, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Govvy: I can clearly hear that my transcription is correct. (Let's continue this discussion on my talk page, shall we?) Mr KEBAB (talk) 11:54, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Aikclaes:, I was wondering if you could have a look at Dele Alli's pronunciation, "DEL-ee AL-ee" didn't seem right to me. I hear the name a lot being a Spurs fan, I hear a split of "De-Lee A-Lee", would like a second opinion thanks. Govvy (talk) 12:42, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Govvy: I have no problem with Aikclaes checking the IPA, but I'm curious what you mean. Are you saying that both words are stressed on the final syllable? That's not the pronunciation I'm hearing in either of the links provided by LoveVanPersie. I think that the pronunciation used by Alli himself is the most reliable one, no? Mr KEBAB (talk) 12:47, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe, but it sounds a little stressed to me, I understand where you're coming from, I also wondered if his name is derived from French-Arabic? Does that factor into the IPA? Govvy (talk) 12:53, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Govvy: Phonetically, the first pronunciation is [ˈdɛli ˈæliː], with a long utterance-final [iː]. In the second clip, it's short [i]. Both words are stressed on their initial syllables.
/i/ is a symbol that covers both short [i ~ ɪ ~ ɛ] and long [iː ~ ɪi ~ əi] pronunciations. Strictly speaking, it's not a phoneme, but a neutralization of the /ɪ–iː/ contrast - see Help:IPA/English. Mr KEBAB (talk) 13:06, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Govvy: Etymology can factor into pronunciation, sure. But it doesn't have to. Mr KEBAB (talk) 13:07, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't worried about the IPA, just the second pronounce, but different people can say names differently and from what region you come from. I just wanted to make sure it is correct as possible. Govvy (talk) 13:13, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Govvy: If you weren't sure about the stress then you must've been worried about the IPA too - see above.
See WP:RESPELL to see that the respelling matches the IPA. Mr KEBAB (talk) 13:20, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Diving

[edit]

The Times ref I added states that Alli had received the most yellow cards for simulation since 15-16 alongside Zaha... it seems like a decent enough source to verify the statement. I added it there in the interests of NPOV, because this article, like most football biographies on Wikipedia, is currently far too one sided. Random journalists' opinions on why he is so great are considered RS but not ones that criticise him. And before anyone tries to accuse me of being a Gooner/Scouser sowing discord, I am a Spurs fan. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 15:00, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's not that or you, I am not a fan of Henry Winter! I am find his writing biased and sometimes offensive. Govvy (talk) 16:24, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Honours?

[edit]

I note that among his honours that are listed are "Runner-up League 1". If that is classed as an honour, then shouldn't his PL runner-up 2016-17 also be on the list?46.7.195.132 (talk) 17:53, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Runner-up in League 1 is see as an honour as it is rewarded with a promotion as well as a trophy. A google image search for 'dele alli league one promotion' shows Dele with that particular trophy. This is in contrast to being a runner-up in the PL, which is not seen as an honour, is not rewarded with a trophy or promotion. To confirm, any finishing position in any English league that results in a promotion and/or trophy is an honour. This includes both runner-up and third place in League Two which are both automatic promotion spots. Hope that helps. FilthyDon (talk) 04:16, 4 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dele vs Dele Alli

[edit]

The player nowadays goes only by the name Dele. I would humbly request the name of the article is changed to Dele, or Dele (footballer born 1996). It seems that the change in his identification is related to the personal issues and trauma he has experienced, as well as being adopted into another family at a young age.

As a source for the change I give the following Sky Sports article: https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11671/13116109/dele-everton-midfielder-tells-monday-night-football-he-can-see-the-light-as-he-hopes-to-make-return, as well as the following articles from Everton FC: https://www.evertonfc.com/news/2689058/dele-you-must-fight-to-play-for-this-club, https://www.evertonfc.com/news/2694212/deles-new-shirt-number-confirmed, https://www.evertonfc.com/news/2759755/dele-seals-besiktas-loan-switch, the player's profiles on X; https://twitter.com/dele_official, Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/DeleOfficial, and Ig: https://www.instagram.com/dele/?hl=en 82.33.139.144 (talk) 06:54, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
