Talk:Delaware languages

For the sake of the GFDL I need to make it clear that the majority of the text at the creation of this article was moved here from the article Lenape; I did not write it myself. --Angr/tɔk mi 20:13, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Delaware versus Lenape

[edit]

"Lenape" only refers to the Unami, not to both the Unami and Munsee. I cut all Lenape-specific references out of this and moved them to Unami language. (Taivo (talk) 07:39, 16 March 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Changed Map

[edit]

I swapped out the map previously on this page for one on the "Lenape" page that gives more useful information. The latter appears to be based on the maps in the "Delaware" article in the Handbook of North American Indians, Volume 15, pages 214-215. It would be better if the term "Lenni Lenape" were removed from the Unami part (although this term was used historically, just who it denoted is not clear; see pp. 235-236 in article cited above for comments), but I don't have the time to figure out how to do that. Sounds / Phonology Material

[edit]

Moving the 'Sounds/Phonology' Material to the 'Unami' page, as was done recently, is premature right now. The relationship between the 'Delaware languages' and the separate 'Munsee' and 'Unami' pages is somewhat awkward since there is the potential for a lot of overlap, and assuming that all three are developed there will need to be some decisions about where particular information goes. Since I am writing the material, my strategy, particularly with the grammatical material, is to develop the prose and then decide later how to distribute (parts of) it, if needed. At this point I am trying to keep the grammatical description reasonably general and leave the more detailed description to the separate Unami and Munsee pages, if I ever get there. With respect to the grammatical description I'd also like in the 'Delaware languages' entry to highlight material showing where Munsee and Unami differ. So I'm probably going to undo the change that moved the Sounds/Phonology material from this entry. Thanks.

OA?

[edit]

Does anyone else think that the language's connection to the Order of the Arrow deserves a breif mention here? --75.93.212.49 (talk) 22:28, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No. There are dozens of popular culture references to "Delaware" (without specifying either Unami or Munsee as the actual source), and its use in OA is just one of them, no more important than any other unscientific popular culture reference to some language or other. --Taivo (talk) 22:54, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
