[edit]Pedro (Pierre) de Marigny de Mandeville, Musketeer of His Very Christian Majesty the King of France Louis XV, Knight of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis, enlisted in the "Companies de la Marine," campaigned against British troops in Ft. Bute of Mandchak, Baton-Rouge (l779), LaMobile (l780). He was the Spanish Governor Bernardo de Galvez's aide-de-camp during the siege of Pensacola (l781) (see: Honor and Fidelity, by J. Holmes)
On Galvez recommendation, Pedro settled Spaniards from Canary Islands on his own plantation ("La Terre aux Boeufs"). They called them "los Islenos" or "Islanders." The village was named in honor of the Countess Livaudais du Suan de la Croix, who built its first church and school. (Louisiana: A guide to the State, 1941, US History Publishers) She was the great grandaughter of Pedro. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.251.39.39 (talk) 19:40, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
