Can anyone throw light on "campground" in the lyrics of Deep River.

I've been wondering about that too. I heard this sung at a recent memorial service, and kept expecting to hear, "I want to cross over into Canaan" (that is, the Promised Land across the Jordan River). Is "campground" an error, either as misunderstood by the author(s) of the lyrics, or by some later transcriber? Is it possible that this spiritual was sung by escaping slaves on the trail to freedom, and refers to a literal campground while alluding to Canaan? That last is just speculation, but I'd like to know. Moxfyre (ǝɹʎℲxoɯ | contrib) 02:23, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The word "campground" has been used by Protestants to refer to an outdoor religious gathering place since at least around 1800, the time of the Second Great Awakening. It is where a "camp meeting" takes place (that Wikipedia article contains the word in a number of places). For other examples of this early use, see this link at Google books: https://www.google.com/search?q=campground&num=100&safe=off&biw=1207&bih=645&source=lnt&tbs=sbd%3A1%2Ccdr%3A1%2Ccd_min%3A1%2F1%2F1700%2Ccd_max%3A12%2F31%2F1850&tbm=bks Almost all the references before 1846 are to a religious context.David Couch (talk) 07:24, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MARIAN ANDERSON VERSION

[edit]

You might want to add Marian Anderson to your list of recordings. She sings a stunning version which may be found on YouTube.
