25 Million Claim
[edit]Daydream has 11 million certified album units in the U.S. in addition to 13 million single units alone, would it be sufficient to reapply the 25 million WW sales figure? fidelovkurt 17:34, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
What release date should be listed in the lede?
[edit]In the "Background and release" section, it says this: Daydream was released in the United Kingdom on September 25, 1995,[1] Taiwan on September 26,[2] Europe on September 28,[3] Japan on September 30,[4] and the United States on October 3.[5]

The lede for a long time has shown October 3, 1995, as the album's release date (which is the one for the US, and follows naturally because Carey is a US artist), but a couple of days ago, this edit changed it to the earliest of the dates listed in the sentence I just cited (September 25, 1995 ... in the UK). And now another editor is changing this back to what it was.
Bringing this up as this could become an edit war. What guideline governs the date we should put in the lede? There usually isn't a problem with albums of today, because there is a global release date, applying to all countries, but evidently, this wasn't the case in 1995.
Pinging Heartfox, who made the edit to the earlier date. MPFitz1968 (talk) 18:18, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- I made a mistake with the UK date. According to the October 7 Music Week (page 21) accessible here, it was actually released on September 28 (Thursday), not Monday Sep 25. The problem is that magazine issues are dated in advance, and so Sep 25 had not actually passed before the Sep 30 issue was published. Therefore, the earliest known date is the Taiwan one, which comes from Sony Taiwan's official website. According to guidance at Template:Infobox album, "Only the earliest known date that the album was released should be specified; later release dates (incl. re-issues) can be mentioned in a Release history section." It does not specify artist home country superiority. This is what I have followed with the edits. I take extreme care with these edits and only source them from high-quality secondary sources like Music Week/Billboard or record label official websites. Heartfox (talk) 21:41, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- I have additionally included a quote to support the UK date, and with this greater transparency, hopefully deter reversions. Heartfox (talk) 21:47, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
