comment

[edit]

Greetings - New to this discussion section... hope I am doing it correctly.

I represent the US based entity who develop public bio info for artist Dawud Wharnsby Ali. I've sifted through the text of this entry and have made an attempt to upgrade its neutrality. Cardamommusic (talk) 20:26, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As the managers of Dawud Wharnsby's music, we have tried to delete links to the on-line listening, as the site listed has never received legal permission to upload Dawud's music. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cardamommusic (talkcontribs) 14:43, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dawud Wharnsby AliDawud Wharnsby — Wharnsby has dropped the "Ali" from his recent albums (starting 2005ish) as well as from his website, Myspace page, etc. That said, he is probably most popular worldwide for his "English language nasheeds" which he released as "Dawud Wharnsby Ali". Still trying to figure out the naming conventions on this. -MrStartingGun (talk) 03:53, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia generally uses the name that is most commonly used in English (WP:UE). Ucucha 20:34, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it should be noted in the text. That is the best place for it. As with Cat Stevens' change to Yusuf Islam, and now more commonly, just "Yusuf", we can not just change article titles every time there is a name change or a stage name is used. Best just to note it in the article itself, and do so with clarity. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 18:20, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dawud Wharnsby's Religious Philosophy

[edit]

The section on Dawud Wharnsby's religious philosophy has been edited and deleted in the past though it's facts are all substantiated by articles and by references clearly linked to Mr. Wharnsby. Members of religious communities who feel they have the right to "claim him" have no right to interject their opinions into this entry by deleting at will facts about him, his life or what he believes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cardamommusic (talkcontribs) 09:00, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The section doesn't really make much sense and I finish reading it without really understanding anything about his religious philosophy. Is he a Muslim or not? Verbatim statements from your client might be helpful. Remember people are buying his nasheeds because they think they understand something about his philosophy, but the article as it stands will probably confuse them and make them hesitant.217.171.129.74 (talk) 22:00, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Muslim or not?

[edit]

Today I received this on my own talkpage:

"Dear GeorgeCustersSabr, for the past year or so I have been keeping an eye on the wikipedia page Dawud Wharnsby, surrounding my work as a professional musician and have been increasingly saddened by the constant interference made to bend the page's focus from my professional work as a social activist and musician, toward a focus on my suspected religious affiliation. Most of the inaccuracies on the page (and there are several) do not bother me, but misinformation about my religious views have a profound effect upon my work, family and relationships. Today I have seen further editing and re-editing that has propelled me to step in. To set the record straight: I am a universalist. The daily spiritual disciplines I may or may not personally follow are not, and have never been, the focus of my work, nor has my work ever been about the propagation of one specific religious ideology over another. Though others may like to think of me as a "Muslim Artist" because of a few recordings of hymns I recorded many years ago, I reject the last 1400 years of the "Empire of Islam" and do not identify as a sunni, shi'a or any other sect within what is known as "Islam" (Capital "i"). As an active editor on Wikipedia who seems to be very detail oriented, I request you to please respect my personal religious views and help me keep the record straight: kindly do not further or facilitate certain people's cause of seeking to align me with their very general religious viewpoints. With thanks, David H. Wharnsby - Enterintopeace"

This editor -- Wharnsby himself? -- apparently dislikes the inclusion of the word "Muslim". Do any other editors have a view on whether or not the word "Muslim" should be included? This source (http://www.soundvision.com/article/interview-with-dawud-wharnsby-ali) makes it pretty clear that he is, or was, a Muslim. It quotes him saying: "All praise is due to Allah Subhana Wa Ta'la who has guided us and made us among those who surrender to Him. ... Even before embracing Islam I was always influenced by my environment, my reactions to certain situations and circumstances, my family and my peers." I am happy to see "universalist" included if it's based on a reliable, neutral, third-party source.

I very much doubt it was him, it is considerably odd due to him naming himself as "David", since he changed his name to "Dawud" and I have yet to see him use his former name anywhere. Most likely a fabrication from someone intending to induce biased information about him.
