[edit]I happened on this article at random, and I am wondering why it is being considered for Deletion. It is not well written, but this person would seem to have a pretty extensive list of works.
This would seem to be one that needs Improvement, not deletion.
- This was an initial entry meant to lay out the basic information. The reason it was listed for possible deletion seems to have been some confusion with a newly entered disambiguation page. The discussion which followed concluded the entry was appropriate and notable. Fucyfre 01:37, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
- It is my understanding that there is to be a new collection of Shapiro's essays to be published next year which may well serve to further amplify the entry. Fucyfre 01:40, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

What the--
[edit]"David's grandfather was a famous cantor well known in the American Yiddish community. David has perfect pitch and is an accomplished violinist. His wife is an exhibition manager at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. David can often be caught at any of numerous art galleries and museums, teaching, always teaching. Something of a wunderkind, he early on met artists and poets in New York. There is another related tale where he played the violin for John Lennon, who played on his violin."
Seems like the same kind of nonsense that was earlier found on the former snooker professional Alain Robidoux's page. Is this "vandalised" version of something substanceful or just, well, slander?
mnivis (talk) 06:49, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- It is not nonsense or vandalism or slander.
- I grew up with David. We were classmates ('64) and close friends in high school, we both attended Columbia, and we have maintained contact over the years. I can't speak to his situation at present, as we have lived on opposite coasts for fifty years and see each other infrequently, but at least in high school and college he did have perfect pitch, as a very fine violinist he was concert master of the NJ All-State Orchestra, his grandfather was the cantor Berele Chagy, his wife Lindsay Shapiro has been Exhibitions Manager at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian for over fifteen years. Allen Ginsberg's aunt Hannah Litzky taught English at our high school while we attended, and David was acquainted with him. David told me numerous stories relating his observations of various poets during our youth (and still does, when I speak with him), and it is at least plausible that he might have played violin for John Lennon.
- This is all "original research" and I am not so interested in getting it into the article but I think a talk page might be OK. I encourage someone else to do the sourcing work. Larry Koenigsberg (talk) 21:41, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
- An obituary for David Shapiro's mother, Fraida Shapiro, at The New Jersey Jewish News, April 17, 1975 lists her father as Berele Chagy, a cantor, many of whose recordings may be found on YouTube The obituary also lists David, his father, and his three sisters. There are a couple of references on the Web to poems by David Shapiro mentioning Fraida Shapiro in the title, for instance at Out of this world: an anthology of the St. Mark's poetry project, 1966-1991.
- I knew the two younger daughters mentioned in the obituary, as well as the deceased and her husband, so I can vouch for the accuracy of that, at least. None of this is adequate for Wikipedia to tie David Shapiro to Berele Chagy, except on this Talk page. As far as I am aware, the numerous other references to their grandfather/grandson relationship on the Web all have their source in David's own testimony, e.g., https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/arts-letters/articles/david-shapiros-narrow-bridge. Similarly with his early violin talents, e.g., https://poets.org/poet/david-shapiro. Larry Koenigsberg (talk) 05:42, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- Two comments in an online obituary for a niece of Berele Chagy come from sisters of David Shapiro. I knew of the older, like David Shapiro a gifted violinist; she mentions being Berele Chagy's granddaughter and the sister of another commenter, Debra Shapiro. I did know the younger, Debra Shapiro, who writes: "I am Berele Chagy's granddaughter, Debra Shapiro. My mother was Berele's daughter, Fraida Chagy Shapiro, of Newark, then Millburn, NJ." All this tallies with the obituary for Shapiro's mother Fraida Shapiro, in The New Jersey Jewish News, mentioned above. Larry Koenigsberg (talk) 23:04, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- The objections raised by mnivis here are quashed in the NY Times obituary cited in the article, q.v.. Larry Koenigsberg (talk) 04:18, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

"matriculating at Columbia University at the age of 16"
[edit]This is untrue. I have only personal knowledge as Shapiro's classmate (and friend) in both high school and college. Still, we both graduated Weequahic High School in June 1964 and both attended Columbia College as freshman in the fall of that year. Shapiro may well have had something to do with Koch before matriculating in 1964, but he was 17½ when he started at Columbia.
Perhaps someone can find a source that doesn't rely on my "original research." Larry Koenigsberg (talk) 04:24, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
