His review of Kupuchinsky's "In the Shadow of the Sun" tells me he has very limited knowledge of the realities on the African Continent. Kupuchinsky's portrayal of Africa and the African, although tragic are as close to the truth as I know and experience on a day to day basis living on the Dark Continent.

Uncharacteristic

[edit]

It was surprising to read "Rieff has expressed strong disapproval of the American policies and actions that both informed and followed the invasion of Iraq." Given his background, environment, and influences, I would have thought otherwise. Are you sure that this sentence can be verified?Lestrade (talk) 16:20, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Lestrade[reply]

Jewish?

[edit]

His mother was Jewish - is he? Nietzsche 2 (talk) 11:29, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Own family

[edit]

A quick google search shows that the strings "son of David Rieff", "daughter of David Rieff", and "David Rieff is married" - and several variations thereof - all come up with empty search results. Does anyone know whether there is any citable statements on whether he has, or has had, a family of his own? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.21.66.189 (talk) 09:02, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find any reference to Rieff's personal life on that order, either, and the only anecdotal (read: non-professional) evidence of his life independent of his mother is an interview with an ex-girlfriend of his, Sigrid Nunez, who wrote extensively about her life cohabiting with Sontag and Rieff; absolutely nothing about his current relationship status, and I assume that that's for a reason; unsurprising, given Sontag's own predilection for privacy. Biographical fact?

[edit]

Okay, what I'm not getting (and perhaps it's belaboring the point to say it): Is there a question as to whether or not Rieff is Sontag's son, or is it a question of whether Sontag had any other children? Citing commonly accepted and frequently stated fact that isn't being openly challenged seems... weird, I guess, particularly given that the fact of the relationship is established in the far more detailed Wikipedia article on Sontag.
