President of the University of Pittsburgh?

[edit]

Was this man President of the University of Pittsburgh? The page says nothing about it, which seems to make it unlikely, but there is a link to this article from the previous President of Pitt. --DThomsen8 (talk) 21:23, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • According to History of the University of Pittsburgh, "David H. Riddle" was acting president from 1849–1855. This "David Hunter Riddle" was president of Jefferson College from 1862-1865. So, the timeframe could possibly work. The Digital Archive bio has him as pastor in Pittsburgh during that time. So, the geography could possibly work, too. Plus, look at the similarities in these pictures. So, I'd say we have a match. We'd need some data from his time at WUP.--GrapedApe (talk) 03:57, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
He is the the same person (see here). He was a faculty member and acting president, not a permanent president (chancellor). He actually served most of his time during a period after a second major fire (the second in 5 years that had destroyed its facilities) hit the university in 1849 and following which operations were suspended as it regrouped until 1854. During this time a new site was purchased and new buildings constructed on Ross and Diamond Streets in downtown Pittsburgh. I'll fill information on his WUP tenure in the article.
