Picture

[edit]

Why was a free-to-use picture of David Corenswet removed? if there was a reason, is there another picture we can use. Jstewart2007 (talk) 03:04, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't a free-to-use picture, but a blatant copyright violation. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 05:27, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Should Superman cast be in top paragraph?

[edit]

News of Corenswet’s Superman casting has been added and removed from first paragraph a few times. I agree that, in general, mere casting announcements should not be in top paragraph, but because Superman is a hugely popular existing character, this casting has been big international news, trended on Twitter etc, so I think it’s significant enough and should be allowed to be put in first paragraph. Charlie939 (talk) 18:54, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree. Filming hasn't even started yet. There's no guarantee that this film even happens. And he can still very easily be replaced, for a multitude of reasons. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 23:26, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand why you’re thinking that only the film is of public interest; most cases that’s true. The Superman big-screen cast is different; you have to understand the international cultural phenomenon that Superman is as a character to understand this. It’s of public interest because as soon as he was cast legions of Superman fans immediately vocally adopted Corenswet as “My Superman,” replacing the previous actor, Henry Cavill, as their pop idol, with a lot of people feeling passionate about it. They are not waiting for the film to see Corenswet this way; based on the long history of this pop cultural phenomenon, it is highly likely that, even if the film didn’t get made, they would still think of Corenswet as the new embodiment of the character until a new big-screen cast is announced, which could be years from now. Also, the casting is not just for the one film; based on reports, it’s for a ten-year run, including TV, gaming images, voice animation, and movie sequels.
In addition, just being cast is vastly more relevant to Corenswet’s bio than almost any other casting would be; it immediately skyrockets his cultural value and status and his bankability vis a vis other projects.
I don’t personally care much about this issue, but based on some editors’ repeated attempts to put the info up top and other editors’ repeated removals, I think it’s helpful for the removing editors to be aware of this context. Charlie939 (talk) 13:07, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, my assertion about the impact of this casting on Corenswet’s bio isn’t based on my personal opinion: the trade magazines have called it “a massive career shift” for him. Charlie939 (talk) 13:15, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nor is my assertion that the casting itself is of public interest my personal opinion. For example, a recent post by Twitter account “Pop Base” announcing the casting has more than 30 million views, 222,000 “likes” and 5,000 comments. Charlie939 (talk) 13:27, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Social media likes is completely irrelevant. Just because this hot news today doesn't mean that it has lasting significance. See WP:RECENTISM. In a month he can be fired or quit the role without shooting a single scene and this can end up just being a footnote on his career. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 14:42, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely agree with JDDJS. You guys need to stop edit-warring. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 15:00, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have not been “edit warring.” I put the info in only once, two days ago, and have not tried to re-enter it after you deleted it. Rather, several other people over the last few months have put the info in the lead and you have deleted it each time, based on your mistaken understanding of the notability, cultural significance and wide international discussion of this casting, which would be a notable fact about Corenswet even if he died tomorrow. It would be all over the news, and far from being “a footnote,” the casting would be the first thing said about him, and the only reason it would even be widely reported in the news. What troubles me about your take, Krimuk, is not that I care about the substance of the info, but that you and JDDS have repeatedly used your superior Wikipedia editor status to erase info based on a mistaken understanding of its status. None of these other editors have “edit warred” with you. Rather, many editors have independently tried, once each, to enter the info, only to all be rolled back by you, summarily, because you are so confident that your analysis is correct. It is not. You have failed to conceptually separate the notability and social significance of a current fact (having been cast and now widely discussed as the “new Superman”) from its future implications (future projects). This is your misunderstanding based on ignorance of the cultural significance of the casting itself. You should let people allow this info into the lead on that basis. It is unnecessary for you to keep summarily removing it. Leaving it in does no harm and does not violate the policy about putting future/contingent projects in the lead. Taking it out summarily disrespects all these editors who independently believe it should be in. because, As one of them said in a note, they are mystified by your removal of it. I ask you to find some humility about your cultural understanding in this context, and next time someone tries to include the info, please just leave it alone.

This isn’t an edit war. It’s your misunderstanding of the notability of this casting Charlie939 (talk) 16:12, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're getting dangerously close to making personal attacks in your rant. You however have failed to cite any policies to back up your opinion and have ignored how your opinion violates WP:CRYSTAL and WP:RECENTISM. You're welcomed to start an WP:RFC to get more people involved in this discussion and try to establish a consensus to include it in the lead, but as it stands now, there's very clearly consensus against including it in the lead and long rants aren't going to change my stance on the matter. Set photo

[edit]

I see a set photo is being used for the picture. I think we should use something else since the picture is of a character played by David, and not David as himself. I suggest using a photo from a premiere, maybe from the Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story premiere he attended. If you can't find a photo that is free to use, I guess we'll have to wait to change it. Jstewart2007 (talk) 18:09, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That all entirely depends on whether a free image of Corenswet is publicly accessible. This is one of the only few free images of the actor available on Wikimedia Commons, and one of the better ones of them we can use at this time. I think it will be a while before a better photo is freely available, and there is WP:NORUSH in getting another image added. Trailblazer101 (talk) 18:23, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. More photos should come in July. Jstewart2007 (talk) 18:45, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
