I'm excited to be able to contribute to wikipedia with this entry. Please feel free to examine it and get a discussion going in this talk page about how it may be improved.
Please note that my contributions remain in good faith and constructive criticism is welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Macronlearner (talk • contribs)
I'm leaning towards a combined article at this point, but we'll see how much material exists. We can start with a draft, and if it gets too long too, then go with separate articles. We also need to add Template:ADF aircraft designations to all relevant Australian articles. BilCat (talk) 20:26, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm waiting on Nick's opinion. I can put a draft together with existing content, but I won't be able to do much expansion. Of course, that can happen once the draft goes live, as with all articles. BilCat (talk) 20:41, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree that this should be at Dassault Mirage III in Australian service. The procurement history of the type is quite interesting, and could probably be covered in greater detail than the type's lengthy but fairly uneventful (aside from a horribly high rate of crashes) operational service. @Ian Rose: from memory, you were considering working on this topic a few years ago so you might want to weigh in here. Hey guys, thanks for getting on board so enthusiastically. I was fortunate enough to be able to talk with a member of the RAAF that was involved in the procurement about the details of this article. I asked them to point out to me anything they think was misleading or wrong, here were their thoughts:
-GAMID was more commonly referred to as Avion Marcel Dassault at the time by the RAAF
-There are temporal implications to the statement concerning the American allies in the Vietnam War putting pressure on the Australians, this is because the Americans were already putting pressure on the Australians concerning the choice of aircraft before and despite the war
-The classification of the aircraft as "front-line" can be read as applying to all the mirages, many of which were not intended to be nor ever used as front-line aircraft
-The RAAF (who was a rader technician) member said he did not remember the Cyrano IIB being a Doppler in brand, this needs a fact check because my sources said it was
-The A3-92 could not have served in the Malayian Emergency (in which this RAAF member served) because this event was 8 years before the craft came into service
Please note that the reason I am listing these concerns here is because I belive these items to be in reasonable dispute but I feel it would be intellectually dishonest to add these changes without more experienced members of the community performing research. This is because the facts contained in this article are cited directly from multiple sources which conflict with this RAAF member's memory. I showed some of the source material for many of the items to the RAAF member and their confidence in the validity of their memories varied from little to great across the items.
