The Fate of German Alpha Jets
[edit]A forum note explains what happened to German Alpha Jets when they were phased out:
"a few former German Alpha Jets over here but if I recall correctly they are operated by the Ministry of Defence (DERA) out of Boscombe Down and technically are nothing to do with the Royal Air Force."
"The German air force had stored the remaining of its originally 175 Alpha Jets since they were outphased at the beginning of the 90s. The British bought 12 Alpha Jets from the German air force for test purposes in 1999. Price was 50.000 DM (~25.000€) for each of the non-airworthy aircrafts. It was estimated that 1-2 million DM (~0.5-1 million €) per plane were necessary to bring them back into a air-worthy condition.
Some else went to Portugal (~50), Thailand (25) and the RedBull-Team (4). Further more some Alpha-Jets engines went to Russia in exchange for some MiG-29 engines."

Ironically they were likely acquired because of the shortage of Hawk planes, one time competitor to the AJ.

The origin of name
[edit]When is it that name of the "Alpha Jet" was decided? In addition, who is it to have named? --saburny 20:57, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Cannon Pod
[edit]Why is it impossible to find any information online regarding the BK-27 cannon pod ammo capacity? I've checked hundreds of books & thousands of websites & all have the same annoying lack of information. Can't someone ask a Luftwaffe armorer who worked on one? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.106.24.62 (talk) 05:28, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
- The BK-27 cannon pod had a capacity of 125 rounds of HE ammunition. Got that Information from a friends dad who worked at a wharf of the Luftwaffe. But it can also be found in the book "Modern Air Combat" by Bill Gunston and Mike Spick from the year 1983. 93.210.235.251 (talk) 23:04, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
