Overpraise...
[edit]Nicely written article. One criticism I'd have is that it occasionally veers very close to overpraising him; while any 250-game AFL player is almost by definition a "rare talent" he never won a Brownlow or his club Best and Fairest (admittedly, he might well have won his club B&F had he not been playing in the most star-laden lineup of the era). Actually, if you can dig up some historical data as to how he went in his club's best and fairest it would be a useful indication of how the club itself rated his relative contribution to the team --Robert Merkel 01:28, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments, Robert. I've no doubt that there have been many better players than White inside and outside of his career span. I'm not sure I completely agree with you about the "rare talent" comment though. The full context for that is:
- His first season of football was an announcement of a rare talent, leading the Brownlow Medal count after three rounds with two best-on-ground performances and kicking the official goal of the year with his first-ever goal.
- I very much doubt that many (if any) players have replicated that sort of start to their careers, hence the reference to "rare".
- I think you've hit the nail on the head in relation to best-and-fairest counts - even when his side wasn't winning premierships he was still playing alongside some of the game's greatest ever players, including Michael Voss (who's got five or six B&F wins I think). So I'm not convinced such a comparison is useful. I'll have a think about how such data might be included though.--The Brain of Morbius 02:01, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
- A further thought - I don't think it's overpraise to describe someone as a "rare talent" if they can be made captain of a side such as the Indigenous All-Stars or be included in the Indigenous Team of the Century. And I've also made sure that some aspects of his life of which he'd be less proud were given some mention.--The Brain of Morbius 02:12, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
Voss has won 3 Merrett-Murray Medals, as it says on his page that I've updated. Anyway, Brain, let me just say, great article. Over at WP:AFL we really don't have many articles that are anywhere near this quality. Rogerthat 10:55, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
