Assessment and comments
[edit]I assessed the article C Class, as it contains a lot of good information but does not fulfil the B Class criteria, yet. I amend some observations, which are incomplete and not at all a proper review:
Whole article
- The article lacks mostly in referencing - for this, the bibliography should be used and the references should be improved to include more information on publishing date, publisher etc. and discussion of the literary work. The pictures are good.
Lead
- The lead should summarize the article much more.
- The John Dunn reference needs to be explained, it is not clear which work it refers to. If it is the poem, then how is a poem a reliable source?
Early life
- Is "33" in other John Dunn reference a page number? If so, it should indicated.
Literary career
- This paragraph is very incomplete.
- 'parted company' is not clear, is it a quotation or ironic?
Political life
- The sections should be edited for clarity.
- "By his own account, he was unable to persuade the skipper of the vessel it was anticipated to use for this purpose to put to sea." should be made more clear.
- "testifying to the skill and luck" should, if a quote, be used as such or be described more simply.
- "The entire escapade almost came to nothing ..." should be rewritten shorter.
- "This close attention of Collins would pursue Figgis ..." should be rewritten clearer.
- "This contravention of policy must be assessed in light of the flagrant breaches of the terms of the Truce that were a daily occurrence at the time." should be reworded or marked as a quote.
Bibliography
- The section does not follow a uniform style
- "In Memory of Darrell Figgis- A Poem" - May-September of what year?

In the lede
[edit]"The little that has been written about him has attempted to highlight how thoroughly his memory and works have been excised from Irish popular culture." Excised because he was a hack propagandist who had served his purpose. I've read "The Historic Case for Irish Independence (1918)" and "The Economic Case for Irish Independence (1920)" and they are 95% rubbish. No wonder his masters lined him up for "The Irish Constitution Explained" in 1922.78.18.252.15 (talk) 21:08, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- That sentence is not appropriate for a Lead when it doesn't feature in the main text, like in a legacy or assessment section. Hence, it has been removed Billsmith60 (talk) 00:29, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Hodges Figgis?
[edit]I can only surmise, given the rarity of his surname, that he has some connection with the famous bookshop. If so, what is it? 79.97.64.240 (talk) 12:34, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes it’s the same family. Darrell was a cousin of mine - my grandmother being a Figgis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C5:FE28:7E00:DD23:2B31:A2EB:10D5 (talk) 00:32, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
