Plural?
[edit]Corresponding articles are Norwegian American, Swedish American, Icelandic American, Chinese American, Russian American. In order to achieve consistency, is there any reason why this one is plural? ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Backspace (talk • contribs) 18:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Should have added my full signature. Sorry, don't know what I was doing with two tildes only. Backspace (talk) 18:50, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Per capita?
[edit]Norwegian American and Swedish American rank the states by number per capita in addition to total number. Does anyone have this information to add to this article for Danish Americans per capita?--RLent (talk) 05:13, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Danish Americans
[edit]Danish Americans are both people who immigrated from Denmark and became Americans and their descendants. There is no point in trying to change the purpose and inclusion criteria of this article. Hmains (talk) 04:08, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- The above is correct. Badagnani (talk) 02:42, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- WP:SYNTH and WP:BLP seem to conflict with you two. Prove Jessica Alba and the others are Danish Americans. Then return them. Thanks. Bulldog123 04:35, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Her WP article gives details of her Danish ancestry. Badagnani (talk) 05:01, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Scarlett should be removed, her mother is a full blooded Ashkenazi Jew. She is not Germanic nor Danish. She is a Jew. Wis —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.185.22.233 (talk) 23:36, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
- Note the anon comment above is exactly why Scarlett Johansson shouldn't be listed as a "representative" of Danish Americans. An individual who has equal affiliations with two different ethnic groups, especially one with which she appears to identify with more, shouldn't be pigeonholed into being poster-child for one over the other. Can anybody seriously identify a source that's not a blog or Wikipedia redirect that calls her a "Danish American?" [1]? Opening up larger discussion here: TALK:German American. Bulldog123 19:29, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
- (1) Last I checked being Jewish is not a nationality, and (2) I can find references (blogs?, not sure?) to that she hold dual nationality and that she may hold a Danish passport -- holding dual nationality is not uncommon for descendants of scandinavians -- whether that makes her a Danish-American is a different matter -- not sure there is an official definition of such matters, and if there is could you explain it to all the "Irish" who lives in the US.
- The concept of racial purity is outdated, simplistic, and has no bearing on reality. How exactly does Scarlett's Ashkenazi Jewish heritage outweigh her equal proportion of Danish heritage? Could one not form a rebuttal against your claim, that Scarlett's father is a "full-blooded" Dane, therefore invalidating her status as a person of Ashkenazi Jewish descent? This is entertaining the idea that one can be "full-blooded" anything, especially in the modern developed world, which is laughable. The distant Levantine ancestors of Ashkenazi Jews almost certainly married gentile Europeans, including many that might be described as "Germanic" (Ashkenaz meant Germany in medieval Hebrew), absorbing a fair number of such neighbors into their own communities. Scandinavian Vikings traveled and traded extensively, not only throughout Europe but also as far as North Africa, Turkey, Iraq, Greenland, and the Canadian Maritimes. --98.114.176.218 (talk) 04:03, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Scarlet Johansson is only half Danish. Her other half is Jewish. Why is she in the infobox? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 45.48.150.202 (talk) 01:23, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Bibliography section is all broken links
[edit]The Bibliography section is all links without articles..., Did they once reference something which a later restructure have changed their URLs, or have it never worked? None of the corresponding Swedish_American, Norwegian_American, etc entries have a Bibliography section -- should it just be deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sorenriise (talk • contribs) 20:06, 6 March 2011 (UTC) The bibliography should still be quite useful for those who remember how to read books or to access libraries and inter-library loan services. Better to leave it intact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.79.155.142 (talk) 16:05, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
My Edits
[edit]I made a small edit to the census date. It should be good and clear now. I did have a question though. Why are there red-links for cities that have not been made into articles? It is understandable that these articles should be created, but it distracts from the article. Please let me know how this works. Thanks. Sharrrks (talk) 15:11, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
Schleswig/Slesvig
[edit]The claim "Between 1864 and 1920, 50,000 Danes emigrated from Schleswig, Jutland, where the use of Danish language was banned in schools following the Danish defeat in the Second Schleswig War and Prussia seizing control. They were called North Slesvigers, however, most of these Danes are recorded in the census statistics as immigrants from Germany rather than Denmark." is factually completely wrong. Historically and scholarly correct, it should be "Between 1864 and 1920, 50,000 ethnic Danes emigrated from Schleswig, German Empire, where the use of the Danish language had been banned in schools following the Danish defeat in the Second Schleswig War and Prussia seizing control. They were called South Slesvigers, and thus, most of these Danes are recorded in the census statistics as immigrants from Germany where they had lived as a local ethnic minority, ethnically and culturally Danes but German citizens." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.219.90.60 (talk) 10:16, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
