Joseph Crosfield (1821–1879)
[edit]The partner in Harrisons & Crosfield is apparently individually notable.
The following is from [1] p. 4:
"Joseph Crosfield was born on 13 Apr 1821 in Liverpool, died on 15 Dec 1879 in "The Dingle", Reigate, Surrey, and was buried in FBG Reigate.
He worked as a Founding partner of Harrisons and Crosfield, Tea Merchants in 1844. Started in partnership with Daniel and Smith Harrison. He worked as a Tea Dealer in 1844 in6 Temple Street, Liverpool. He worked as a Tea Dealer in 1854 in 3 Great Tower Street, London. He worked as a Clerk of Yearly Meeting from 1864 to 1869 in London. Clerk of the Meeting for Sufferings 1870-1874. He was a Quaker but resigned membership on account of a moral lapse. in 1874. He was re-instated in 1877.
Joseph married Elizabeth Backhouse, daughter of James Backhouse and Deborah Lowe, on 18 Aug 1847 in FMH York. Elizabeth was born on 4 Aug 1823 in York, Yorkshire, died on 22 Apr 1852 in Liverpool, and was buried in FBG Penketh. They had four children: James Backhouse, George Theodore, Josephine and Albert Joseph."
The material is well referenced, but couldn't be used directly here.
With those dates, he coincides with a Quaker minister. He was an associate of William Forster (philanthropist), an abolitionist who visited Ireland in the 1840s. Charles Matthews (talk) 12:12, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
This identification [2] of "Joseph Crosfield, born 1821, of Liverpool ... afterwards of Reigate" seems clearcut. It is known that Crossfield the tea merchant built a house at Reigate when the company moved south. Charles Matthews (talk) 13:52, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
