May 2023 updates

[edit]

A lot of headway has been made in the Dakota language revitalization field in the past decade; I have updated spellings to include diacritic markers and match the dialect they are representing; I have added a field of verb types with examples and definitions, and added wiki-links to pertinent linguistic terms for users to interact with. I also added a bunch of links to resources from various parts of the greater Dakota community. This is my first time working on wikipedia and it was suggested to me by @Oncamera to make the page really work for our learners. I appreciate any discourse on how I did that is constructive. Yes, it's important to use linguistic terms when writing about the language, but this page also needs a Dakota language teacher to help Wikipedia:Make technical articles understandable so your changes have been helpful. I encourage you to make more changes to expand on the language. If you look at a page like English language you can see how much info can be written in a common way for the average reader to understand it.  oncamera  (talk page) 02:05, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Vowel Inconsistency

[edit]

In the phonology section of this article it says, "Dakota has five oral vowels, /a e i o u/, and three nasal vowels, /ã ĩ ũ/." But it goes on to list /ɑ/ as a vowel and two instances of /e/ without any instance of /ẽ/, if someone could add explanation or if this is a mistake, fix the issue, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Stary114 (talk) 20:02, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch - the ɑ is the correct IPA for the "a" vowel, and the "e" is mid front in placement so the double instance was incorrect. however there is no nasalized "ẽ" in Dakota, surprisingly. I corrected the issues and appreciate the find. Dakhod'ia (talk) 00:51, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
