I think that the compatibility with respect to older units and/or to that of the TV is different, it would be nice if someone clarified that. (by 67.185.99.246 23:52, 12 January 2007 (UTC))[reply]

I believe the user was wondering why the information in this article (DVD-R DL) was so similar to that in DVD+R DL. I was wondering the same thing myself, originally thinking maybe it was a title mistake. But apparently there are two different "DL" formats. Sigh... (As for the "TV" part of the comment, I have no idea what that's about.) - dcljr (talk) 00:12, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Compatibility comparison DVD-R DL / DVD+R DL

[edit]

Just wondering if anybody knows of an article where one can get some insight in what format is the most compatible with older drives of the two (+/-). --85.224.4.98 18:34, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It appears they were released to the market at a similar time, so the compatibility should be similar. Pioneer supported DVD+R DL earlier than -R DL. The Pioneer DVR-108 from mid-2004 supported writing +R DL only (specifications, mirror) (mirrored because sadly, Pioneer recently deleted all historical PDF files from their website). But it didn't take long for drive manufacturers to support both formats. The DVR-110 from late 2005 started supporting DVD-R DL. CDVDBD (talk) 06:52, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

-R DL Available at retail?

[edit]

So far, it seems like this isn't a technology available at retail. 100% of all dual layer recorders I've seen use +R DL. And I've only seen +R DL media for sale. Are there any shipping products that actually use -R DL? --71.158.218.4 (talk) 06:41, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DVD-R DL discs are hard to find nowadays where as DVD-R single layer discs and DVD+R DL are readily available ("up for grabs"). Probably because DVD-R DL are unappendable (no multisesioning possible) according to the developer of dvd+rw-tools, Andy Pokalov (source), and this post on Debian forums. This means the entire space would have to be filled in one go and any unused space is wasted. CDVDBD (talk) 06:20, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look at manufacturer RiTEK's website, and DVD-R DL is still listed ("±R DL" implies both +R DL and -R DL). But it appears those are intended for retail only, not directly for end users. CDVDBD (talk) 06:40, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

-RW or +RW

[edit]

I've seen references to DL DVD-RW or +RW media, but not in the field. Has his been released and, if so, should there be some reference in the article? 66.191.19.68 (talk) 23:42, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have read somewhere that they were under development but never finished due to low reflectivity issues. The purpose of recordable media (with the exception of DVD-RAM) was to be as compatible as possible to factory-pressed media, meaning readable on existing DVD devices, and this was apparently unachievable with DVD±RW DL.
The disc testing tool qpxtool lists both -RW DL and +RW DL, so apparently in anticipation to those formats, optical drives were already made able to declare support for those formats, but probably no drive in existence does (except probably some unreleased prototypes in factories).
