Date of birth
[edit]The article currently lists a date of birth as c. 1866. This is based on the 1960 newspaper obituary stating that he was age 94 at the time of his death in 1960. However, the records from ancestry.com suggest a birth date of August 1868, which is also more consistent with his having been a college student at Lehigh starting in approximately 1889 or 1890. Multiple census records suggest a birth date in 1868. The 1900 census (the only one that gives a month and year of birth) lists a David M. Balliet living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, born in August 1868. He was listed a native of Pennsylvania, employed as a General Agent. The name is unusual, and there is no other David Billiet in Pennsylvania who appears in the census records. In my experience, the 1900 census record is likely to be more reliable than a newspaper obituary written almost a century after his birth. Don't feel strongly about changing the DOB in the article, but figured I'd at least note the discrepancy on the talk page. Cbl62 (talk) 01:07, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- The cited November 1893 Princetonian article says he was 26 at the time. That suggests he was born in late 1866 or 1867. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:01, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- More likely 1867 since the article came out in November, but I'm leaving it alone until there's something more definitive. Cbl62 (talk) 04:14, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
