Not necessary
[edit]It is a personal opinion that this dis page is not necessary. Thoughts? Meander₪ 06:35, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- If it didn't exist for anything else I'd have created it for the European constituency and added the national sports teams, as I've done for some other EU countries. The constituency needs a link, but it looks strange to add it as sole hatnote - see discussion at Northern Ireland. PamD (talk) 09:09, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hi PamD i think i understood your edit. I dont understand why though. I think the European constituency articles for member states should be named "European Parliament constituency (Cyprus)" and not the other way round. European country articles already exist. The constituency refers to the representation of member countries in the Union thus it should be linked to Foreign_relations_of_Cyprus or a dis. page there. In addition i think the national sports teams should be a dis at the Cyprus#Sports or country#sports section. Can you please elaborate on why you have created this dis. and not as expressed above? Any arguments against the above? Meander₪ 12:04, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hallo Meander: there is an article for every Euroconstituency in the format Name (European Parliament Constituency) - too late to change that pattern unless you want to get into very prolonged discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject European Union. Given that, I believe that there needs to be a link, either from an article hatnote or from a dab page, from the unadorned "Name" of the constituency. Some constituencies are named after regions, not whole countries - see Yorkshire and the Humber. The same applies to UK parliament constituencies: there is a set pattern of name, with a distinctive term in brackets, and links are provided from other uses of the name - see Crewe and Nantwich as an example. Again, for a reader who doesn't know much about how wikipedia works, it is helpful to be able to go from the country name (via a dab page) to the sports team which they, as a fan of football/basketball/whatever, think of as "England" or "Cyprus" or whatever, without having to dig down into a long article first. The link to the category provides a neat shorthand way to link to every national team, needing no updating to the dab page if new national team pages are created. PamD (talk) 12:59, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
Reality
[edit]The island is divided in two. This page gives undue importance to the political fiction that it is united.93.96.148.42 (talk) 02:09, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
Northern Cyprus
[edit]I think it's unnecessary to include the Northern Cyprus page as one of the searches in the disambiguation page. In disambiguation pages we include pages with the exact same name. The geographical definition of Northern Cyprus makes a clear distinction from Cyprus(Republic of Cyprus). There is anyway a reference to Northern Cyprus in the Republic of Cyprus page. The same thing will happen with North Macedonia as it is going to be removed from the Macedonia disambiguation page in the following days. Engelleip96 (talk) 22:29, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
- Engelleip96: I agree that NC does not belong in the list, but I have retained it as a "See also" element. The other two entries should imho stay; please explain why they should be removed. About North Macedonia, I think you are wrong; it should definitely stay. But that discussion will be elsewhere. --T*U (talk) 15:38, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
1.The (Republic of) Cyprus page is itself a part of the EU territory and thus an EU Parliament constituency. We actually repeat writing the same page.
2.Cyprus DLR station can be included in a different section (like Transportation) because in a broader sence ,it does not constitute a geographical location
3.Agreed with your editing on the NC page in the See Also section
4.I am a frequent user and editor of the Macedonia page and other users and i we generally agreed that there must be some change in the Macedonia disambiguation page. But we agreed in consensus that North Macedonia shall not be a choice in the Macedonia dp. (Maybe we will insert the North Macedonia page in the See Also section) Engelleip96 (talk) 15:55, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- Engelleip96: 1) As long as there is a separate article titled Cyprus (European Parliament constituency), it is pertinent to have a link to it here, so it belongs. 2) As long as there is a DLR station named "Cyprus" and there is a separate article titled Cyprus DLR station, it belongs. 3) Fine! 4) You say
we agreed in consensus that North Macedonia shall not be a choice in the Macedonia dp
Could you tell where to find that consensus. --T*U (talk) 16:19, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
1.Didnt say we can complete vanish the Cyprus EU P page and DLR station page. But they must not be included in the places section. An EU Parliament constituency is not a place... It's a political entity within the EU. Cyprus DLR station in a broader sence does not constitute a distinct location. It's an institution/complex and part of the transportation system of London.
2.I honestly can't find the discussion we had (but it's absolutely after Jan 25 19) about Macedonia because the Macedonia talk page is a chaos these days. We were arguing about when to change the name of the page but almost everyone agreed that North Macedonia is North Macedonia and Macedonia( greek region and geographical location ,where North Macedonia is included) cannot be together in the same dp. Engelleip96 (talk) 16:37, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- Engelleip96: 1) Initially you did remove those two entries, which was why I reverted you. I will not contest your groupings, even if it is a bit weird to have so many sections with only one entry each. 2) What talk page are you actually talking about? If you are talking about the Talk:Republic of Macedonia page, there is no such consensus to find there. There are a few mentions about the dab page, but no conclusion and certainly no consensus. Anyway, that is not where the future of the dab page will be decided.
- On another note, will you please read WP:INDENT about how to use indentation in talk pages. Thank you! --T*U (talk) 17:04, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
