currency name

[edit]

I wonder why this article says lira is an unofficial name. The banknotes (see [1]) show lira only (λίρα and lira). Also, it looks like lira is the Turkish, even though the Turkish lira is called lirasi in Turkish. Anyone have more info? Ingrid 02:27, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's also lira in Turkish. The si is a possessive suffix, so lirasi means roughly its lira [of Turkey/Cyprus] (see Turkish grammar for the gory details). --Explendido Rocha 07:00, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't quote me on this but I think its meant to be as an unofficial English name. in Greek both pounds (ie pound sterling) and Lira (ie Turkish Lira) are both referred to as Λίρα Chris Ssk 02:14, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the wrod unofficial but it's been reinstated. Can someone give more details?

It should be removed but in fear of an edit war I am not going to edit. Should it by done? Wetter88 (talk) 18:57, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

9 Piastres?

[edit]

A simple question: Why were there 9 piastres to the shilling? The Turkish lira and pound sterling were approximately equal in value, making the Turkish piastre worth about 15 of a shilling. Any ideas?

Rounding Down

[edit]

More and more companies claim as theirs the original promise to round down their prices when the euro starts circulating in Cyprus. It's really impossible to verify their claims and also there are accusations that they have already increased the prices on some of their products so that they can round down later. For this reasons, I have removed the relavant paragraph at the end of the "History" section of the article. Q43 16:54, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Euro replacement as non-case

[edit]

From Slovenian tolar:

"During the first wave of EMU, this period was only a day (the conversion rates were fixed on 1998-12-31 and euro non-cash payments were possible from 1999-01-01). Also unlike the first wave of EMU which had a three year transition period (1999-2001), there was no transition period when non-cash payments could be made in both tolar and euro. The tolar was used for all transactions (cash and non-cash) until 2006-12-31 and the euro must be used for all payments (cash and non-cash) from 2007-01-01"

When will euro replace CYP for non-cash transaction? If found out, can someone add to the infobox? Thanks. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 08:43, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here it states http://www.centralbank.gov.cy/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=4424 During the period September 2007 – July 2008 there will be a dual display of prices in Cyprus pounds and euro so that is the period you are talking about. Enlil Ninlil 09:51, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
