Parodies

I expanded the bullet about Human Giant in the Parodies section. Technically, though, those aren't all parodies. Just because Crystal Pepsi appears in a TV show, that doesn't necessarily make it a parody. Perhaps the "Parodies" section should be renamed. --scott

Clear versus clear-colored

I just changed "clear-colored" to simply "clear." Perhaps I'm being a bit too picky, but clear isn't a color where I come from. Maybe someone could do further research which may warrant a description such as transparent or translucent or whatever.Gabenowicki 02:46, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

"Clear" on its own is a bit ambiguous. "Clear-colored" doesn't sound right either. Somewhere in the article is a reference to "color-less" sodas - how about that? Rd232 ^talk 08:54, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Market failure

Just a note on why this failed, from my experience (on a short detour from working on New Coke). I remember shortly after rollout, a lot of the supermarket chains started putting their own clear colas out (it couldn't have been that hard to just leave the caramel coloring out of the syrup). Not all of these tasted so good (I remember in upstate New York, the word got out pretty quickly to avoid Wegman's Diet Clear Cola). Crystal Pepsi had all the brand awareness, however, and took the flack for these tasteless imitations. Any research out there on this question? Daniel Case 17:11, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

I just remember going to Smiths to buy a box of it & being peeved (for years) when it wasn't there & continued not to be....followed by Cactus Cooler (fruit soda sold only in rural areas of like, 2 states), Pineapple Fanta (their orange is so nasty), & Chocolate Cherry cola, which never made it to any shelf in any store I ever shopped at.

Does anyone remember Crystal Clear Amaco Ultimate (Gasoline)????

• It was indeed, actually starting with Ivory's reformulation and marketing in 1991. As best as I can tell, Pepsi was the first company to take that extension further than consumers could follow, but because of the amount of marketing they put into it, many others followed suit in 92 and 93 (including Coke's Tab Clear and the aforementioned Amaco Ultimate). The problem being that clear still meant "mild" and "clean" to Ivory customers, but meant "mild" and "tasteless" to many Pepsi consumers. I've added some referential links about that era in marketing to the article for those who want to read a little more. It's definitely a case of someone at Pepsi convinced everyone to buy into a very faulty concept. I'd love to know what the total marketing expenditure from all the combined "clear" products was during that time, vainly trying to convince consumers that clearer was better. --BizMgr (talk) 04:09, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

I Remember...

The first and only time I had this was when I was about 9 sneaking into the Faulkner Hospital's vending machine room with my friends (this is what we did for fun and adventure) and then in a sugar crazed frenzy we would proceed to the parking garage and jump off the back of it. This was especially fun when it snowed and they would plow all the snow form the top most level over the edge and create large snow piles to land in on the ground.

Another more funny (less relevant, but funny nonetheless) aspect of this memory is seeing the many many home made bongs made of small plastic bottles with a hole punched in the side, a straw inserted in said hole, and some foil on the opening on the top to act as a screen and not knowing what it was at such an age. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, "Rejoice O young man in thy youth..." (and ignorance)

Crystal Pepsi cap contest

I vividly remember flipping bottles over myself looking for winning caps. I cannot seem to find any media coverage of it, though. Which seems strange. Anybody else have any luck?

Seems like a "duh" concept since any clear soft drink in a clear bottle would show anything under the label. With Sprite, they use green-colored plastic to cover it over. But this is just logical and I don't think it would actually need to have some sort of media coverage. But I guess the Wiki-rules apply to all or they apply to none.

David Novak

David Novak (CEO of YUM! brands) wrote a book in 2007 called "The Eductation of an accidental CEO". He was the creator of Crystal Pepsi, and in his book talks about how he went through with idea despite "warning signs", specifically negative feedback from Don Kendall (founder of PepsiCo)and the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Association. In Dec., 2007 Novak was interviewed by Judann Pollack in Advertising Age. In the interview he says that Crystal Pepsi was his worst marketing mistake. He also says that Crystal Pepsi was ahead of it's time and that it could have been sucessful if managed properly. This is my first time to participate in Wikipedia so I'm not really sure how it works. Any advice would be helpful! If anyone wants to use this info. feel free. Mexico availability

Removed Stanford paper

The statement "Initial sales were good but quickly fell" would need a different source entirely, not just an additional source. The paper in question has only one statement about Crystal Pepsi: "On the other hand, despite extensive market research that suggested likely success as well as Pepsi’s large marketing budget, consumers evidently had a strong preference against a caffeine-free, clear cola (known as “Crystal Pepsi”)." Not only is the source of this information not given in the paper, but it doesn't even imply the sentence that was in the article.

Then in September 2014 The Coca-Cola Company re-introduced the soft drink Surge, leading to speculation in the public and amongst media about the return of Crystal Pepsi.[10] Then the Bring back Crystal Clear Pepsi page reached out to LA Beast in April of 2015. To back up the claims that Crystal Pepsi is back, and in what territories - reliable sources are required. Please provide these before adding content again, thanks.

Infobox image

TAC PlazaMaster, with regard to the proposed infobox images, I would personally say that neither are the best - the original image has excessive lens flare that disguises the actual crystal clear aspect, and the new image has condensation that does the same thing - you cannot see the crystal clear contents.

The infobox should be the best image to represent the article subject, and of the two, I'd say that the original is just - and only just - the best option as it does show the clarity. But I'd be on the look out for an alternative to both.

Finally, I think that Smuckola needs to moderate their edit summaries - frustration aside, the image certainly is not "garbage". Chaheel Riens (talk) 07:47, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
