Crotalus helleri → Crotalus oreganus helleri – Reflects actual scientific name listed on ITIS. – The current agreed upon scientific name for this species is Crotalus oreganus helleri, not Crotalus helleri. This is listed on the Integrated Taxonomic Information System: https://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=683065#null. ITIS reports the use of Crotalus helleri to be invalid: https://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=209542#null. This accurately reflects that it is a subspecies. This name is also used by major government groups like FWS: https://www.fws.gov/species/southern-pacific-rattlesnake-crotalus-oreganus-helleri as well as field guides. Crotalus helleri should instead redirect to Crotalus oreganus helleri rather than the other way around. Hotdogsyrup (talk) 20:52, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- Comment initially made at WP:RMTR: The Reptile Database supports the current title: Crotalus helleri at the Reptarium.cz Reptile Database — BarrelProof (talk) 05:52, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. ITIS cites The Reptile Database (as of 24-Dec-2016), and Peter Uetz (who maintains The Reptile Database). There is no reason to follow ITIS's adherence to an old version of The Reptile Database rather than the current version of The Reptile Database. The Reptile Database is apparently following this 2016 paper in treating helleri as a full species. Plantdrew (talk) 15:30, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
