Serious name confusion
[edit]The problem this article was creating is that it was occupying a space that belonged to a different species. Long story short: the former species Merapioidus villosus and Romaleosyrphus villosus were fairly recently placed together into the genus Criorhina. They both can't use the name Criorhina villosa, but Wikipedia can only have one article with this title. The problem was that the text of the article had been referring to the species whose name cannot be Criorhina villosa instead of the species whose name actually is Criorhina villosa. The problem extended well beyond Wikipedia. The Wikidata links included several that referred to the US/Canada species (the true Criorhina villosa - linked via iNaturalist, BOLD, and the GBIF mapping data), and several that referred to the Mexican species (that presently has no name at all - the other links). The links in Wikidata to "Merapioidus villosus" did point to the correct taxon, but - for example - the BugGuide link was to Criorhina villosa, the correct name, and not Merapioidus villosus. I have edited the Wikidata entries so all of the subsidiary statements there now point to the actual species named Criorhina villosa. I am hopeful that some well-meaning editor does not undo this, by not realizing that the previous sources were pointing to two different taxa. Until the Mexican species is given its own name, it should not have an entry in Wikipedia or Wikidata, unless that link is via the original name (Romaleosyrphus villosus). I may just create a Wikipedia article of this sort, that can be changed when that species actually has a new name. Dyanega (talk) 22:13, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
