Lavinia Smyth
[edit]WikiTree [1] follows The Peerage [2] in saying that James Smyth, father of Lavinia Smyth, was James Smith (MP for Taunton) described at https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1715-1754/member/smith-james-1681-1734. I require to be convinced. Charles Matthews (talk) 09:05, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
The reference to Cokayne [3] given in The Peerage says that Charles Bingham, 1st Earl of Lucan, when the 7th Baronet, married Margaret Bingham nee Smith, daughter of James Smith of St. Audries. So the proposition is, first, that Lavinia Smyth was the younger sister of Margaret Bingham; and, second, that their father James was the MP for Taunton. Charles Matthews (talk)
So putting together https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1820-1832/member/fellowes-william-1769-1837, which says "William Fellowes of Ramsey Abbey and Lavinia, da. and coh. of James Smyth of St. Audries, Som." for the parents of William Henry Fellowes, and [4] which says Margaret Bingham was "daughter and co-heiress of James Smyth of St. Audries ... and of Grace Pyke, of Pixton, his wife", there doesn't seem reason to doubt Lavinia and Margaret were sisters.
