Talk:Cory Lidle/Archive 1
Who was at the Controls?
[edit]The plane Lidle was in had two sets of controls. Therefore, no one at the moment can say for sure who was flying the plane at impact or at any other time of the flight. This may be determined after an NTSB investigation, but that's months away. I'm therefore changing any wording that says Lidle was piloting or at the conrols and the like to reflect the fact that it's unknown. --Spiff666 14:13, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]Please Remove the Controversies. I know it may seem odd but it wasn't even a large deal. Many players have this after they leave a team includng Abreu, Alex Rodriguez and more.

CNN IS CONFIRMING DRUG USE. Him and the instructor apperently had cocaine on the plane.

"Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was the pilot of a small airplane that crashed into a 50-story Manhattan condominium, killing Lidle and three others, according to the New York medical examiner's office." ESPN.com is quoting the NYC Medical Examiner's office. It's cited, he's dead, get over it.
-Unverifable Yahoo! News says he's feared dead, so are we sure he's dead? We may want to put some "feared" or "unverified" there. --Simfan34 21:54, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

- New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was the pilot of a small airplane that crashed into a 50-story condominium in Manhattan, and Lidle is one of two confirmed dead, New York police said. (Lead story on ESPN.COM) SirFozzie 21:02, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Ok, FBI confirms he was piloting the plane. Yeah, he's dead now. I'll take the FBI's word over ESPN's. Thanks. ChangeOfFate 21:03, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Pitcher believed dead; passport found in street, sources tell CNN 128.2.125.108 21:04, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
AP still casts doubt. I say we refrain from a making a decision untill a consesus among the news agencie's is reahced.[2]
Seriously - "FBI Believes" is not the same thing as a confirmation. As of yet, I haven't seen any real confirmation that he's dead. Just because ESPN or Fox News says he's dead doesn't mean he is. They have no source of confirmation. It's poor journalism, giving a definitive answer with nothing to back it up.
- They found his passport on the ground! I don't think he dropped it from his pocket walking down the street as a plane which just happened to be registered to him crashes into an apartment. --CFIF ☎ ⋐ 22:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- What if someone else was using his plane and his passport was just in the plane? He is very likely dead, but without true confirmation I think people are irresponsibly jumping to conclusions.
This might help make sense out of why the sources have been so confused. WEEI (a sports radio station in Boston) reported tonight that at the time of the accident his wife and son were on a commercial flight heading to California and could not be reached. Presumably, official sources were trying to reach his family to tell them directly, so they didn't hear this on the news, but rumors got out of hand. Rickterp 02:55, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
The bottom line is, Lidle is presumed dead, not dead. No body has been found. This page should not list him as deceased. October 13th, 1:07 AM eastern time
- What are you talking about, his body was found, family notified by the authorities....it's no longer in question.71.119.202.68 00:00, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- His body has not been officially identified yet, unless that has changed in the 6 or so hours since I've read up on the story. Stoneice02 07:48, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- He is dead. His family has been informed, his body has been identified. I don't understand why this is still being doubted.
NBC, CBS, and ABC seem to be going at it, too
[edit]He apparently did die in the crash. — Rickyrab | Talk 21:04, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Terrorism / Accident?
[edit]"Cory Lidle died October 11th 2006 when his plane crashed into a residential building in New York. Initial speculation regarding the place crash included the cause being terrorism, rather than an accident."
All the major news stations are reporting it as an accident, NOT terrorism. An FBI spokeswoman also said there is no indication of terrorism. The sentence should be changed. MonkBirdDuke 21:06, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
For obvious reasons the first guess on the crash was terrorism, but I think that's out the window if you confirm it's Lidle. (Expect a bunch of unsourced speculation about suicide soon.) Fan-1967 21:08, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Players for the Yankees commit terrorism? — Rickyrab | Talk 21:08, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

- A-Rod's defense was pretty bad this year, but I wouldn't call it terrorism. Fan-1967 21:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- After that series against Detroit, suicide may be probable. MonkBirdDuke 21:22, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not about to add anything about it, but I was thinking about this as a suicide even without the article as it is implying it. --BDD 21:48, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- After that series against Detroit, suicide may be probable. MonkBirdDuke 21:22, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Suicide would be more likely than terrorism, though an accident is most likely of all. Since when does a Yankees player commit terrorism by flying into a Manhattan building (now if it crashed in Boston...)--Grand Slam 7 23:44, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20567155-2,00.html - it says he only just got his license, and his flight instructor was the other person killed - I'd say it was inexperience. It seems everyone in the apartment block has survived - I don't know how serious the injuries are.
The image was created the plane hitted 19th floor on the bourder of Manhattan and Queens in the main New agencies and only later it was changed into 40th (the first image was huge, coreection -neglibble). We understand, what could mean 19th after 11 09 2001

By TYLER KEPNER (NYT); Sports Desk Late Edition - Final, Section D, Page 5, Column 1, 989 words DISPLAYING ABSTRACT - When the Yankees fly, the pilots are not only in the cockpit. There is another pilot in the main cabin, where the players sit. He is probably studying his hand-held Global Positioning System receiver, tracking the weather and noting the plane's precise speed and altitude. He is Cory Lidle, ..
Picture
[edit]I think that Lidle, being a baseball player first and formost, should have a baseball related picture up, not just a picture of him with his plane Russianmissile 21:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- He'll be remembered as the guy who flew his plane into a building though. MonkBirdDuke 21:16, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Undoubtedly, but his main picture should be in the context of baseball, since that was his profession and the original source of his notability. Bhumiya (said/done) 21:34, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
The picture of the airplane is a cessna 172, not the Cirrus CR-20 he was flying today. Fox News TV reported that it was a CR-20, and Mayor Bloomberg stated that it was a composite airplane and mostly burned up, not the aluminum that the cessna is made from.

- It is not confirmed until his remains are found and identified. I think it is inappropriate to say that he is dead in the article until it is confirmed. --Aguerriero (talk) 21:26, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Confirming dental records and DNA is going to take a very long time; I think it's prudent enough to put it on the page since most news networks are confirming it. Afterall, I think if Lidle were still alive he'd probably call someone to set it straight by now. MonkBirdDuke 21:42, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- To some degree, the news networks have gotten things wrong before, and they often cite each other when reporting unfolding events. I'd consider that before choosing which syntax. Notary137 21:44, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
He called a radio show just a couple of days ago to defend himself over the hosts ripping some of his quotes. He called in right away. With that being said, I'm pretty sure that he would have called SOMEBODY by now to refute the reports of his death if he was alive. Or am I crazy... J-Dog 23:38, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
