Zona reaction

[edit]

This is also known as the Zona reaction, is it not? Ought mention be made of this in the article? --RMB

Acrosomal reaction merger

[edit]

The articles should definitely not be merged. They are completely different proceses. 70.105.121.30 16:03, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I vote against the article merger, as the Acrosome is a structure in its own right, and deserves an article.

How long does cortical reaction take? Is it possible that two spermatozoa can reach the inside of an oocyte? What would happen then? --Abdull 12:41, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i am against the merging also

those are two preceeding reactions and are not the same

one concerns the sperm plasma mem. and the other the zona pellucida.

    • Differentiate**

The acrosomal reaction and cortical reaction are two different instances. The acro reaction is initaited by the sperm to penetrate the oocyte and the cortical reaction is intiated by the oocyte to prevent polyspermy. It's a good idea to compare and contrast the two, as they do work together, but merging them together is confusing.

The articles should not be merged. The two subjects are completely different. The cortical reaction happens in the egg. It is the exocytosis of the cortical granules. The acrosome reaction happens in the sperm, and is the exocytosis of the acrosome.

(The answer to Abdull's question above is that the cortical reaction takes about 30-45 sec in sea urchin eggs; longer in larger eggs. If two sperm enter the egg, then in most cases the embryo will die. In some species the zygote can spit out some of the extra sperm. In a few types of animals it is normal for extra sperm to enter, but they degenerate and don't take part in embryonic development.)

'Zona Reaction' & 'Cortical Reaction' Different??

[edit]

The cortical reaction and zona reaction are different aswell, are they not ?? Isn't it correct to say...

Cortical Reaction: hyperpolarisation of the ovum's plasma membrane leads to release of cortical granules into perivitelline space, initiates zona reaction.

Zona Reaction: cross linking of Zona Pellucida proteins leads to the hardening of the Zona Pellucida, sperm receptors in zona pellucida destroyed Silverbhagwat (talk) 18:23, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cortical Reaction Project?

[edit]

I am considering developing this page further as part of an educational assignment in Fall of 2013. If someone else is also working on this, please send me a message and let me know soon, so we donʼt duplicate initial efforts in page development Blairwal (talk) 21:40, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It could be helpful to add to the page that during the well-studied sea urchin cortical reaction, the "elevation of the fertilisation envelope" is accomplished via glycosaminoglycans. Blairwal (talk) 21:45, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
