Copyvio
[edit]The Art section is copied in its entirety, from his biography (by Mathew Korfhage). I've therefore removed it, as there is no evidence that permission has been received to use it. Sionk (talk) 19:32, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
How can I site permission for Matthew Korfhage? Alice0000 (talk) 19:37, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
- See WP:COPYREQ. The easiest thing to do would be to describe Smith's art in your own words (and citing reliable independent sources for the information). Sionk (talk) 22:42, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

this was already done. Also Matthew Korfhage gives his permission to use the biography he wrote for Corey Smith (artist)...how do I add this Alice0000 (talk) 01:57, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
How can I correct this? WP:IOWN please advise - thank you Alice0000 (talk) 03:53, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
- Alice, the above people are wrong, I'm fairly certain. You don't need permission for this. A simple list of a person's artwork does not rise to the standard of copyrightable material. I have removed the copyright violation notice, though I will follow up on this, and re-add it if necessary Qwyrxian (talk) 08:12, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
- The copy-pasted material was nothing to do with a list of art or exhibitions. It was the art-speak description of Smith's art, which I removed. I agree the massive 'copyvio' notice was a bit unnecessary, considering the copy-pasted material had already been removed by myself and the other editor. Sionk (talk) 14:28, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
- All that being said, I've just scrolled to the right of http://coreysmithtimetravel.com/about.html and noticed the list of exhibitions. The content and presentation format of list or statistical information is normally copyrighted too. The author here has done nothing to re-write or summarise the information in their own words so, in my view, it would be fair to removed that information too (unless it is presented in a substantially different way). Sionk (talk) 14:34, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
- Now that the primary copyvio issue seems to be resolved (thank you to everyone who participated in what appears to have been a convoluted edit path), there remains the question of the exhibition lists. As the list on the source website appears to be inclusive and not selected creatively or using any proprietary methods, it seems likely that the reuse of that information here is either fair use or common usage. I note that this differs from creatively selected lists (Best Monster Movies ever, or the like) and from proprietary lists (Top 100 hits of the 70s, etc). Those types of lists cannot be reused. We will, of course, want to source anything likely to be disputed in the lists (and the above WP:SPS is not a reliable source). The copyvio template and process are a bit cumbersome, but I understand the need for the process. --Tgeairn (talk) 17:20, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Is there a more appropriate name?
[edit]Is there a more aptly descriptive name than Corey Smith (artist)? There seems to be some confusion about his notability as an artist (hey, Van Gogh's paintings were not worth much until well after his death, & the Brandenberg concerto manuscript once sold for about $22). However, he is quite well known as a snowboard designer, & before that as a snowboarder. I do not know if he competed, but he clearly is in the snowboarder press.
However, renaming the article Corey Smith (snowboard designer, artist, and snowboarder) seems a bit awkward. Does anyone have any suggestions? Peaceray (talk) 07:57, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
There really is no other descriptor for Corey Smith (artist) because he is also considered an artist by the snowboard community with his handmade snowboards being acquired by the Utah Snowboard Museum. http://springbreaksnowboards.com/spring-break-boards-in-the-slc-snowboard-museum/
