Mathew Flinders landed here
[edit]couriermail.com.au - July 13, 2007 12:00am
AUSTRALIA'S circumnavigator Matthew Flinders, with Sydney Aborigine Bongaree aboard his compact sailing boat Norfolk, sailed into Moreton Bay in 1799. Jones's research showed Flinders had recorded a line of latitude 5 nautical miles north of Karragarra Island.
Flinders had noted a deep channel to the east and positions of pandanus and a red cliff on the island.
Jones's insistence was rewarded when it became official that Flinders landed on Coochiemudlo.
In 1999, a replica of the Norfolk sailed into Moreton Bay to commemorate Flinders's historic exploration.
On Sunday, at 11.57am, when Flinders took sextant readings on the island's eastern beach, local ferryman Mark Bowden will be rowed ashore by T.S Norfolk sea cadets, to capture the moment.

Adjacent localities
[edit]I was not quite sure what to do with the adjacent localities in the infobox. The ones listed were not right, but fixing them was a challenge. The requirement to subdivide a local government area into a set of suburbs and localities is a bit complicated when your LGA includes a number of islands. In the case of Redland City, each of the populated islands (like Coochie) is a separate locality whose boundaries are the island plus a small amount of surrounding water. However, Redland has authority over a large section of the waters of Moreton Bay including uninhabited and sparsely inhabited islands. This is dealt with by creating a single locality called "Moreton Bay" within Redland City (not a great choice of name given Redland City control only part of it) to cover all the waters and islands of Moreton Bay except for the ones in their own localities, that is, the "left over" bits. So strictly when you look at the official boundaries of the localities within Redland City, Coochiemudlo Island has Victoria Point immediately to the west and the locality of Moreton Bay in all other directions. However, I am not sure this is what a reader expects of "Suburbs around Coochiemudlo Island" as the infobox calls this adjacency information; most readers probably do not expect large areas of open water to be a "suburb". So I compromised. Where there was another suburb/locality reasonably close in a particular compass direction and separated from Coochie only by water, I used that place as the adjacent "non-water" locality. That left only north and south as the two compass directions in which there wasn't an obvious suburbs (there is nothing but water to the north through the length of Moreton Bay and a bunch of uninhabited islands to the south until you reach Woongoolba in northern Gold Coast), so I left those adjacencies as Moreton Bay. I felt I needed to document this compromise between accuracy and reader expectation in case anyone was wondering about it. Feedback welcome. Kerry (talk) 22:56, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
size?
[edit]I'm curious about the size of the island, which normally would be included in an entry about an island but is curiously missing here. Can someone add it, if known? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Perm Dude (talk • contribs) 18:14, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
