Talk:Control (2007 film)/GA1
GA Review
[edit]I recently saw this movie and enjoyed it immensely (if "enjoy" is the correct word to use, that is). This article is fairly good, but it needs a little more work as far as the criteria goes, specifically in regards to its prose (1a) and its broadness (3a). Here are my suggestions/comments for improvement:
- The lead section needs to be tweaked and/or rewritten somewhat:
- The sentence dedicated to the film's title violates WP:LEAD since it isn't mentioned anywhere else in the article; I think it could be removed entirely for now.
- Nowhere does it say that Sam Riley stars as Curtis, which needs to be made clear in the very first paragraph.
- Control is a 2007 film is not specific enough for the leading sentence; what genre is it?
- Black-and-white needs to be linked.
- The screenplay written by Matt Greenhalgh is based on the book Touching from a Distance: "The screenplay was written by Matt Greenhalgh, who based it on the book..."
- The film was winner of the Director's Fortnight...: "The film won the Director's Fortnight..."
- The long litany of awards only appears in the lead, which also violates WP:LEAD; this info should be moved to the "Reception" section and briefly summarized in the lead. Also, remove quotes for prize names like "Best British Independent Film".
- The plot needs to be cut down drastically. According to WP:MOSFILM, plot sections are to be "between 400 and 700 words and should not exceed 900 words". Because the plot is not so very complicated, this shouldn't be hard. I also suggest removing superfluous, non-plot details such as what song plays at what point and editorial comments, such as "The film then follows". Stick to what happens, not to what we as the audience see. Once the plot is cut down, I'll read it with a critical eye for prose issues.
- Todd Eckert and Orian Williams are the producers. Deborah Curtis, Ian Curtis' widow, is a co-producer...: past tense.
- The "Production" section in general requires more references. "Wilson was the one who gave Joy Division their TV break on the local magazine programme Granada Reports, and he also founded Factory Records, which released most of Joy Division's work" especially needs one.
- I think that the "Production" section is missing some potential information. The "Soundtrack" section states that "all live Joy Division performances in the film are performed by the actors". Did these actors already have musical training? Did they have to train/rehearse before filming? Any reactions from them about performing in the film, what it was like, do they enjoy the music, etc? Music is such a huge part of the film, but it's not even mentioned here.
- Curtis' daughter's cameo and "The Fall" mention seem somewhat trivial as they appear now; can they be contextualized as far as production goes? i.e., why did the director choose to have Natalie make a cameo? Did she say anything about the process? Why mention "The Fall" and Riley's past role at all?
- The Weinstein Company secured the rights to release the film in North America after its success at Cannes." What success at Cannes? The only mention of Cannes before this is what is in the lead, which doesn't count. There needs to be info about its premiere within the body of the article.
- The DVD was released in the U.K. on February 11, 2008, followed by the Australian DVD on March 12, 2008, and the North American DVD on June 3rd, 2008. Date fixes: link full dates and the last should be June 3, 2008 (without the "rd").
- The film grossed box office of $7,824,260, with 89% of its revenue from foreign countries. "Foreign countries" is odd. "Outside of England"?
- The first line of "Reception" should establish what is already stated in the lead: the film was generally well received by critics. Also, especially since it's mentioned in the lead, what have critics said specifically about Riley's performance?
- On a side note, New Order is mentioned as having contributed to the soundtrack, but nowhere is it stated that Joy Division sans Curtis = Joy Division.
I think the article has a lot of potential, but it needs more work before it can be promoted to GA-status. I'll place the nomination process on hold until various issues and concerns have been addressed, but I plan on doing a second review once the above comments have been taken care of. When you're ready for the second review, or if you have any questions regarding anything I've said above, please leave me a note on my talk page. María (habla conmigo) 14:48, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- This nomination has been on hold for a week with little work done. Any updates? Is more time needed? If so, please let me know; otherwise I will have to fail the article for GAC at this time. María (habla conmigo) 13:26, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
- As I've received no reply from the main contributors, and a majority of the outstanding issues above have not been addressed, I must fail this article's nomination for now. I greatly advise that the above suggestions be taken care of being renominating this article at WP:GAC. Best of luck, María (habla conmigo) 18:49, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- I intend to take upon the job of revising the article. When the above review was posted, I was very busy so did not have time to make revisions. Now I will gradually fix the problems and nominate it later. Regards. Chimeric Glider (talk) 15:52, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
