"questionable judgement"?? The Britannica article cited says no such thing. It rates him throughout both the 1866 war with Austria and the 1870-71 war with France as "a fighting General of the very first rank". In particular Von Alvensleven's III Corps @ Vionville/Mars-la-Tour on 16 August 1870, though heavily out-gunned and out-numbered, took on and defeated most of Bazaine's Army of the Rhine, and blocked its escape from Metz.
