My 12 yr old son is a high functioning autistic since birth. He was recently dignosed, I believe wrongly, as being bipolar, even though his internal mood has never changed and he has never been optomistic, expansive, or "manic." After 8-10 months of completely ineffective treatment with antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, I happened upon the information that manic episodes are rarely, if ever seen in autistics! Is this true??? Could my son actually have the very frequently seen ADHD and major depression as comorbid diagnoses, rather than the unheard of bipolar diagnoses???
Perhaps those of us with autism should be more hesitant to be treated by any professional whose specialty is NOT autism!
