CAE in the Automotive Industry
[edit]The second paragraph of this section is little more than advertisements for various CAE tools. At what point is this straying from NPOV? I'm not sure enough about this to remove the paragraph, but at the same time, I feel that leaving it without mentioning all of the major tools is rather unfair. I won't even get started on how to decide what tools should be considered "major". Anyone have a better understanding of WP policy on this to share? - EndingPop 14:25, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Structure of CAE, CAD, CAM, ... ?
[edit]Category:Computer-aided design has the following text:
CAD stands for any of Computer-aided design Computer-aided drafting Computer-aided drawing and may be coupled with CAM (i.e.: CAD/CAM), which stands for any of Computer-aided modeling (or solid modeling) Computer-aided manufacturing and can be coupled with computer-aided analysis and Computer Numeric Control CNC.
The entire process is called computer-aided engineering (CAE).
Is that correct? If so, it is not reflected the the Category tree for these subjects. -- tooold (talk) 18:34, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
I have never heard CAM referred to as "Computer aided modeling" and I have written about the subject for 28 years. CAM is always understood to stand for "computer-aided manufacturing" by mechanical or manufacturing engineers.
Similarly "computer-aided drawing" is not a phrase I associate with CAD. In the 1970s, CAD consisted largely of optimization. Daniel Whitney taught a course at MIT on this topic.
And CAD can refer to what is typically now called "electronic design automation" or EDA. The name of Cadence (one of the two largest EDA companies) is a play on CAD. Cadence was formed by the merger of ECAD and SDA Systems.
CAE is not generally considered to be the combination of computer-aided design, drafting, and manufacturing. The term 'computer-aided engineering was coined by the late Jason Lemon, founder of SDRC and International Techenegroup. He meant it to stand for engineering analysis techniques, such as the finite-element method and computational fluid-dynamics.Cyon Steve (talk) 22:06, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
MSC PATRAN
[edit]Why does the topic "PATRAN" link onto this page? PATRAN is merely one of many CAE products and it works in merely one of the disciplines of CAE. At some point last year I saw an independent page for PATRAN. There is a page for the commercial product "NASTRAN", so why not one for the tradionally related product "PATRAN"? Even if it is a dinosaur (and perhaps especially so) it should have a page. Perhaps the original article was deleted because it was too commercial, or perhaps somebody at MSC deleted it since PATRAN is being phased out??
"CAE in the automotive industry" is starting to get Spammy
[edit]OK, I've struggled with this on many pages. On the one hand, the software in use in industry is a useful bit of knowledge. On the other hand, this big long list is sounding more and more like each person just added their favorite tool, which might also be the one their company distributes. At what point is this advertising? Do we just spin it off into a list like in List_of_finite_element_software_packages, so the Finite_element_method didn't get cluttered with spam? - EndingPop (talk) 21:26, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Definition
[edit]As part of an attempt to cleanup the CAD, CAM, CAE, etc. articles and categories, I've found the following definitions of CAE:
- CAE is a term embracing the related areas of CAD, CAA, and CIM.
- Software tools for use by engineers.**
- A broadly inclusive term that includes application oft he computer for general tasks encountered in mechanical engineering, including analysis, design, and production.***
- CAE is the generic name given to a collection of computer aided techniques used in aeronautical and other types of mechanical engineering. It comprises of CAD, CAM, MRP (materials requirement planning), and CIM.****
- CAE allows several applications to share the information in the database. These applications include FEA, NC data, and the design of IC and various electronic devices.
- An umbrella term that covers all uses of computer in engineering applications. Thus CAD, CAP, and CAM are branches of CAE. The subject area is not usually taken to include software engineering.*
Note that there is pretty much wide agreement on the definition that it encompasses all other "computer aided X" within it. As such I'm going to rework the introduction to reflect this. (Also note that the "*"s correlate to be the same sources as listed on the CAM and CIM talk pages.) Wizard191 (talk) 17:15, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Definition seems confused with CAx
[edit]The definition as I have understood it in the aerospace industry over the past 15 years is that CAE is analysis software including FEA, CFD, etc. and is distinct from CAD and CAM. The umbrella term has been CAx. Doing a quick Google search of "CAE Definition" suggests that other industries also use CAE in this way:
