Known mistakes

• Tracks 81 and 93 are the same -- both are the demo version for "The Lifting".
• Track 94 (an acoustic version of "The One I Love") is actually live 8 June 2001 (Museum of Television and Radio CA). It's the same version that can be found on the compilation "In Time: The Best of R.E.M.". The MMM Sydney version is different from both and can be found on "Not Bad for No Tour".
• Tracks 33 (slightly longer due to more audience noise) and 89 are the same. It's the funky version of "Drive", actually played live only in 1992 (Nov 19). It can be found as a b-side to a "Monster" single and also on the "Alternative NRG" compilation.
• There's a previous mistake associated with track 87 (a live version of "Turn You Inside-Out"), which was reported in the entry for "In Time: The Best of R.E.M.". Considering the original release, the placement on this (1988-2011) compilation can be considered erroneous.
• Track 14 ("Shiny Happy People" hip mix) has a(n obviously unwanted) silent gap between 0:27 and 0:48.

Yeah, I just see this. It's a listing error. Track 20 is supposed to be a live version of "Orange Crush" but is actually a repetition of "Dark Globe". - 187.20.71.73 (talk) 01:14, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

I saw the same mistakes in three completely different sources in both FLAC and MP3, but couldn't tell the platforms they had come from. I could just imply they were coming from the label, but good thing you could have that checked as a fact! Oh, thanks for that. And good to know they took any sort of interest in it. I only wonder if there aren't more mistakes still unreported, as I haven't downloaded the whole compilation to check. (I already had all the material and just needed to replace a couple of tracks.) Section by "Disc" and grouping/title?

This digital-only album is sectioned by "disc number" (in iTunes, Amazon and Google Play music) and Grouping by single or album name (in iTunes). Should I separate out and name the 45 different "discs"? Whaddya say? Fantailfan (talk) 11:46, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

I think the 131-song list should be kept like it is, but maybe adding a "(from...)" like some already have. I can also suggest the same pattern used in the "In Time" entry, with the name of the song, then an asterisk under it with all the info, composers, source, etc. But maybe it's just a lot of (maybe unnecessary) work. - 187.20.71.73 (talk) 18:50, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Missing Rarities

I think tracks on VA comps shouldn't necessarily be included unless R.E.M. released them on their own. More to the point for this article, I believe the list in this section need not be exhaustive successfully to make the point that "Complete" doesn't mean complete. Another article with a comprehensive list of released R.E.M. songs would be a better place for that sort of thing. Fantailfan (talk) 10:04, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

I think tracks from compilations like those qualify not only as R.E.M.'s own work (especially in the case of an original like "Photograph"), but also as part of their Warner catalogue and also "rarities", and should be included to better represent the concept of "complete". I agree it's debatable, but it's my view that, if they wanted a 1-complete 2-Warner's 3-rarities, those should have been included, along with many others pointed in the "examples" part. - 187.20.71.73 (talk) 13:04, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Nola

The R.E.M. website (and the the Wikipedia entry) lists this song as “NOLA-4/26/10” (Non-Album Track) (http://remhq.com/news_story.php?id=1996) but the various download sites list it as "Nola (Live, 4/26/10)." I hate the concept of Live in Studio - it's just another take, isn't it? Does that mean everything else is a mass of overdubs? When I was a yout everything was Live in Studio (except The Beatles). Changed name to conform with REMHQ nomenclature. Fantailfan (talk) 16:18, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Well... I sure can see that, but it's not the norm anymore, right? I mean, albums today are recorded in separate channels and all and that came to be the norm. When a band decides to do something live in studio, it's kind of a different thing than what is usually done, and even the technology for that is radically different from what it used to be when the Beatles recorded. What I can say about NOLA is, the fact that it was recorded live in studio is actually kinda irrelevant, since this is the only version of this song in existence anyway. When you have a studio one and a live in studio one, now that would matter -- see both versions of "Suspicion" in this compilation, recorded with the full band in studio all at once (or so they claim), and not as separate tracks. It's supposed to be identified as such to make a difference from the original "Suspicion" on Up. Just having fun on the live in studio bit. We've already fiddled around a little with some of the titles (for example, with the Jools Holland tracks) so the name doesn't agree either with the digital download track name or the list on REMHQ. Oh, sorry, lol. I get it now, sorry for the rambling. Anyway, about the extra info, I think someone who refers to this entry to know what's in the compilation will be even better served than if they go to any other place, don't you think? I mean, they have the right thing according to any official source, the correct list and all, plus the extra info on sources. I guess it's not original research since it's not original results, just factual, added info from Wikipedia itself, but I'm far from being a Wikipedia expert. Resolved issues

Some have been resolved, and I removed them from the Known Issues section.

Resolved:

• The first track, "Funtime," is no longer listed as live.
• "Shiny Happy People" (Hip Mix) dropout is fixed.
• "Orange Crush" (Live) is no longer "Dark Globe."

Not resolved:

• "The Lifting" original is still mislabeled. That should be fixable.
• "Turn You Inside-Out" is still mislabeled
• "The One I Love" acoustic live is still mislabeled.
• The possible lossy-source tracks are probably unchanged.

Thanks, Fantailfan. Do you think it would be useful to add a subsection under the "known issues" part about "resolved issues", so people would still be informed about defective files roaming around? I'm all for information, so I'd go for that. Something along the lines of:

• Track 1 ("Funtime") was originally listed as a live version, but is actually a studio recording. It's correctly listed now.
• Track 14, "Shiny Happy People" (Hip Mix), was released in this compilation with a silent gap from 0:27 to 0:48. That has been fixed by iTunes and the track is available as a whole now.
• Track 20, listed as "Orange Crush" (Live), was a repeat of "Dark Globe." This has been fixed by iTunes and the mistaken track was replaced by the correct song.
