Politics

[edit]

I have included politics as this is highly relevant to Gaelic football. It is less so with rugby union although there are certain issues. Gaelic football has always been republican/nationalist, down to the use of Irish on shirts etc. Rugby union has tended to stay out of the debate - both nationalists and unionists have been Irish internationalists.--MacRusgail (talk) 13:23, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A simple line stating the above would be acceptable , whole paragraphs leads to undue weight being give to the what is essentially and article comparing 2 games Gnevin (talk) 15:10, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all. The references to hurling and the GAA are entirely relevant. Gaelic football has always been politicised, and Gaelic football's governing body, was until recently highly political. (There are also issues with the Protestant community, which I haven't mentioned) Rugby is less obviously political, although there are certain political tendencies in it, e.g. the continual pushing of the "Lions" who coincidentally visited British colonies on a regular basis. --MacRusgail (talk) 10:30, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure I would agree that pushing the the Lions is political .I'm not disagreeing that Gaelic has been politicised, nor am I say we sweep it under the carpet what I am saying is we don't need half this article turning into a repeat of section found at the GAA article

Amateurism

[edit]

One big similarity that I haven't mentioned yet in much detail is both codes slavish adherence to amateurism. Rugby union gave this up in the 1990s, but it was a major factor in its history.--MacRusgail (talk) 14:50, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You many also want to mention shamateurism in both codes Gnevin (talk) 15:11, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I know a lot about shamateurism in rugby union, but next to nothing about its equivalent in Gaelic football, although it must occur.--MacRusgail (talk) 10:32, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copied

[edit]

Why did you remove the copied templates? Gnevin (talk) 15:12, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I placed it in the article, as you requested.--MacRusgail (talk) 10:27, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Owe okay. They don't go in the article they are added to the talk page as above Gnevin (talk) 10:38, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gaelic Football and Early Soccer

[edit]

It would make more sense to compare Gaelic football with early pre Association football. Cambridge and Sheffield rules had the fair catch but no running with the ball. The similarities between early soccer (not an American word but a Victorian English word) and Gaelic football are great. If soccer had kept the fair catch then Gaelic and Association football would probably be very similar games today.

As it is this is a poorly researched article.
