use on currency?
[edit]other than it's use on the coat of arms, i can't recall seeing the star used on currency. have i missed something, or is this article a little innaccurate?WotherspoonSmith (talk) 00:52, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- The coat of arms appears on currency (e.g. 50c), and hence so does the star. Pdfpdf (talk) 04:34, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- So.. the article is technically correct, but why single out currency? I think we can take it as read that the star appears every time the coat of arms does. I am removing the line because it does not belong in the article. WotherspoonSmith (talk • contribs) 07:23, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- Damn.. I was too hasty. My apologies.

[1] there's a centenary star on the 2001 canberra centenary 20 cent piece. (Oddly, the $1 coin that year (same web page) uses an 8 pointed star..)
and this special "2001 Centenary of Federation encapsulated Proof .999 Pure Silver Dollar with its removable centre" [2] (via [3])
and the old kangaroo pennies [4]
and shillings [5]
and maybe even the $50 note counts, though it is part of the southern cross [6]

Seventh Point
[edit]I was under the impression that this represented only territories, and that if another state was added another point would be added. I think it was brought up a couple elections ago when Northern Territory also had a referendum to become a state (which was unsuccessful) Lynx Raven Raide (talk) 03:01, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Use of Coat of Arms vs Use of Star ...
[edit]WotherspoonSmith makes a good point, viz: "I think we can take it as read that the star appears every time the coat of arms does."
How many of these other examples are actually use of the coat of arms?
"The Star also appears on
- the badge of the Australian Defence Force - i.e. the ADF coat of arms Image:Autriservice.gif
- the Defence Force Service Medal Image:DFSM with Fed Star.png
However:
"It is also used as an ornament to official buildings such as Parliament House, Canberra."
Is the star used by itself, or as part of the coat of arms? (I suspect the latter.) Pdfpdf (talk) 09:57, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
medals
[edit]I've added reference to a few medals, but wasn't sure where to stop. The [|list of pages that link to this one] suggests there's a lot.WotherspoonSmith (talk) 14:13, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with File:Defence Force Service Medal (Australia).png
[edit]The image File:Defence Force Service Medal (Australia).png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Is there any good basis for referring to the star on the Australian flag as the "Commonwealth Star". So, for example: (1) when was this phrase first used? (2) does the Australian Government refer to it as the "Commonwealth Star"? (3) is this "Commonwealth Star" description any more commonly used than other names attributed to the Star? (4) is the "Commonwealth Star" description a term that only came into use by virtue of Wikipedia (bar isolated use before that) ?
I don't know the answers but am interested in informed comment. I will raise this on the Australia page also as few editors view this page. 86.42.28.118 (talk) 22:57, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Seventh Point
[edit]The article states "Six points of the Star represent the six original states of the Commonwealth of Australia, while the seventh point represents the territories and any other future states of Australia". Yet, as the article also correctly mentions, the 7th star was added for the Territory of Papua. I know that, since Papua New Guinea became a country, it is commonly said that the 7th star represents the territories, but is there any law or official code which states this, or is it merely a common presumption? - 124.191.144.183 (talk) 14:16, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
- I've heard all manner of claims about the 7 symbolism for the Commonwealth - that the 7th represents either the federation itself or the territories or an individual territory, or that it was intended for New Zeland and everything else is either a placeholder or an attempt to find something else to fill the gap. Gallery. Caption.
[edit]The image in the gallery says 1908 (with 7 points), but the intro says (7 points) adopted in 1909. MBG02 (talk) 16:34, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
Federation Star
[edit]The reference cited for claiming it’s still officiallly “the Commonwealth Star” says 1908. I heard, often, c1988, that it had been changed to “Federation Star”. Got more info? MBG02 (talk) 16:38, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
Hollow?
[edit]The graphic on the top-right looks hollow / engraved / debossed, rather than embossed / popping up as stars like these usually do. Was that intentional? 92.67.227.181 (talk) 18:04, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
