Contentious editing

First comment

This page is subject to controversy. It appears that several parties are correcting the contents, while another party changes the edits and flags the edits (which are in fact clarifications) as "vandalism".

The problem is, this person - the one screaming "vandalism" - is in fact serving the interests of the subject (Colin Angus, and is probably him) which are dubious. Claim of a circumnavigation of the world is utterly absurd and not only contradicts Guinness Book guidelines, but it contradicts logic and wikipedia definition which stipulates that a circumnavigation of a globe must touch antipodes.

Therefore, the subject defending Colin Angus is in fact entering fallacious and unethical information, degrading wikipedia, doing all users a disservice, and embarrassing Angus by undermining his own credibility in the adventure community. 139.142.98.135 (talk · contribs) 12:43, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Second comment

The editor making the "clarifications" is not doing so from a neutral point of view or with adequate references. The most recent editor username is "harveytj", which most likely is Tim Harvey who is Colin Angus's past expedition partner. They parted ways during the circumnavigation expedition and their relationship was acrimonious. Harveytj has removed large chunks of the biography, which are referenced and accurate, and replaced them with information that is attempting to diminish Angus's endevour.

The claim of a circumnavigation is not absurd, it does not contradict logic, nor is it fallacious or unethical. National Geographic Adventure recognized the circumnavigation and awarded Angus the Adventurer of the Year Award for this expedition.(http://press.nationalgeographic.com/pressroom/index.jsp?pageID=pressReleases_detail&siteID=1&cid=1163531707116) Guinness created guidelines seven months after the completion of the expedition. These guidelines do not require antipodes but require an equator crossing, which Angus' expedition did not have, and thus Angus' circumnavigation would not be eligible for a Guinness record. (http://www.angusadventures.com/guinness_rules_circumnavigation_by_human%20power.pdf) When the expedition began the only guidelines for circumnavigations over land and water where by the FAI and those were followed. (http://www.angusadventures.com/circumnavigations.html)

Furthermore, Harveytj uses the biography to draw attention to his friend Jason Lewis, who is attempting a human powered circumnavigation, but inaccurately states that his will be a true human-powered circumnavigation (his does not conform to Guinness guidelines or most other circumnavigation guidelines).

It seems contrary to Wikipedia standards to allow someone with an acrimonious relationship to the biography subject to edit the biography in such a manner. Mustang13 03:30, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Third comment

Mustang_13 made an assumption that was untrue, which led to a libelous letter sent to a wide assortment of my publishing-industry contacts. The claim was that I have been defaming him (making the assumption that mustang is Angus) on wikipedia. In fact I have been conversing with people close to me, one of whom took it upon themselves to make several encyclopedic improvements to the Angus bio. I appreciate the efforts of those who would do so based on true information that I provide, because such things as the Khromov rescue should not be overlooked in what is said to be an "unsupported" row. For that matter, the Atlantic crossing was not strictly unsported - the crew can be seen accepting food provisions from a passing sailboat in this video: http://www.exn.ca/video/?video=exn20060302-rowboat.asx My point is that the modifications, from what I can see, were all improvements, although more could and perhaps should be made. There are many relevant positive details about Angus's life as an inspiring adventurer that could be included as well - please don't misinterpret me, Mr. Angus.

I could make corrections and additions myself, but please forgive me if I do not. Otherwise it will be true, what Angus today stated in a letter through a lawyer, charging me with all manner of libelous activity. None of the accusations hold any water whatsoever, and I dismiss it as a bluff, knowing what I do of Mr. Angus's propensity to intimidate. However, that is not the point. My point is that if I physically edit wikipedia myself, it will be unequivocally evident that I myself have done so. Thank you do those who have carried my knowledge into the public sphere. If anyone has any questions for me, I can assure you that true and non-libelous information of the fundraising, planning and early execution stages of Angus' most recent adventure, when our respective journeys coincided, I would be happy to share. 303-800-6702. But I will not make such edits myself. I am outsider to Wikipedia, or was until now, although I applaud you all for your efforts. Fourth comment

Wikipedia:Neutral point of view is one of the most important policies for this encyclopedia. If you have any doubts about what it might mean, please read it.

The three guidelines and policies listed below describe particular types of participation which are to be avoided on Wikipedia. If you have any doubt about what they might mean, please read them also:

I have refactored this talk page three times for continuity and comprehensibility:

  • after a later post was added above an earlier post (diff)
  • after the page was blanked (diff)
  • after a post was again added above earlier posts (first diff) (second diff)

Chronological order on talk pages: first post at the top, each subsequent post below the previous post. Please respect Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. Thank you. — Athænara 08:59, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you Athænara. I am new to Wiki but quickly learning the conventions. However I often find it unintuitive. I feel this image is appropriate for the discussion, but wonder if posting it would offend anyone or be considered helpful: Image:Angus-map.jpg Galiano kayaker 02:57, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. I think it's a good image. I've corrected the display markup for it in the article. (I should add that I do not know how to upload images, so I find your ability to do that pretty impressive.) — Athænara 03:25, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Circumnavigation

Regarding Human Powered Circumnavigation: “circumnavigation of the northern hemisphere” needs to be changed. By definition to circumnavigate means to go around the perimeter of an object. Webster’s ninth edition defines “circumnavigate” as to go around instead of through. For example, if you walk a big circle around the middle of an island you have not circumnavigated the island. It is necessary to travel beyond the outer perimeter of the shoreline. The northern hemisphere is composed of everything north of the equator. This means a circumnavigation of the northern hemisphere would have to be a route that takes place outside of this region.

Colin’s journey could be correctly termed as a circumnavigation of the southern hemisphere, a circumnavigation of the North Pole, or a circumnavigation within the northern hemisphere. The first two are confusing and don’t adequately convey what the journey is composed of. “A circumnavigation within the northern hemisphere” or “A circumnavigation of the world within the northern hemisphere” would be the most accurate description. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.85.237.130 (talkcontribs) 19:19, April 14 2007 (UTC)

I think it should be desribed as a non-anti podal circumnavigation or something of that nature. Emphasize the fact that what he did was a circumnavigation but was not anti-podal. Iankeir 05:03, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
