Suburb or town?

[edit]

Is there any firm definition of 'suburb' we can use? I'd tend to agree that Coldstream is more a town than a suburb, but I can see how the argument could be made the other way. I'd consider Lilydale to be the end of the suburbs, but urban sprawl may soon change this. Then again, the area is mainly vineyards, so sprawl may be hindered in this case. Anyway, if there was some way we could solidify this description, I think it would improve the article. Cnwb 04:08, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll check with my urban planner friend about official boundaries of "Greater Melbourne". One thing I do know is that (unless the government changes its mind *again*) there won't be any more suburbs heading east into the Yarra Valley. --Robert Merkel 04:23, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
One possibility is to use the census collection districts that fall into the locality of Melbourne according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. here's the list of census collection districts for Coldstream, and the corresponding one for Melbourne (which includes hundreds of areas giving a 2001 population of 3.2 million or so). Ergo, the ABS doesn't count Coldstream as part of Melbourne. --Robert Merkel 04:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Just noticed the changes you made - nicely explained. Cnwb 04:57, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
