Starting this page
[edit]I started this page as part of my Behavioral Ecology class at Washington University in St. Louis. I found mainly primary research articles and compiled information on C. bowringi's geographic range, food resources, parental care (specifically oviposition), life history (focusing on life stages), and mating behavior. I plan to add more to this page in the future! Esacchetti (talk) 17:48, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Wiki Education assignment: Behavioral Ecology 2024
[edit]This article was the subject of a Wiki Education Foundation-supported course assignment, between 16 January 2024 and 25 April 2024. Further details are available on the course page. Student editor(s): Esacchetti (article contribs). Peer reviewers: Angelina2024.

Peer Review
[edit]Hi, I am adding a peer review to your article! I really enjoyed reading your page and thought it was very well-written! It was laid out very neatly and was easy to follow. I made a few edits to your page. I added a couple of links to some terms such as oviduct, KSR2, and P38 so readers can easily access more information about these terms. I also reformatted the Life history section so that each stage is a subheading rather than just a bolded term with a colon. Finally, I added a brief section called Pests of crop plants detailing information about the beetle as a pest and a possible method of controlling it. Angelina2024 (talk) 05:28, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
This article was extremely thorough and displayed very clearly articulated writing. The organization and flow was made it really easy to read. I added a link for the MAPK-ERK Kinase pathway to clarify that term for readers. I delved deeper into an existing reference and added to the Pests of Crop Pants section, unveiling potential solutions for pest control of this species. There were some formatting issues with a reference added to this article which I fixed. I also edited a few lines throughout the page to improve the clarity of the descriptions. Finally, I reformatted the stages in the Life history section as sub-heading 1 so that the subheadings would appear in the table of contents. This page was very detailed in discussing various topics about this beetle. However, I think the article would be improved by spreading out and adding new sections that focus on the impacts the species has on households, agriculture, the economy, and more as a pest. Peer Review
[edit]Overall, I thought the life cycle section was written and sectioned out!
For the rest of the article, I went through and changed a few words and sentences that were misleading or unclear. Some of the sentences were hard to read with long run-on sentences or many commas/fragments. I also linked the “oocyte” Wikipedia definition link.
Further, the section titled “Parental Behavior,” was not appropriately titled. I renamed this section “Oviposition Mechanism and Regulation” as it discusses more about the ovary development and mating regulation (through physioregulation)—which I also added as sub-heading titles. I also created more sub-sections within the mating section. Wikipedia recommends subsection to contain no more or less than 200-600 words. So, I broke them into subsections titled: Influential factors and Polygamy. Also renamed “Pests of Crop Plants” section to “Pest Control.” I also split up the section into two paragraphs and rearranged them so that the paragraph first details what plants that the beetle lives on. Then, secondly, possible methods of pest control.
As a random aside, the scientific name for turnip and bok choy was incorrect. This was corrected. This article could also use some more pictures, but I was unable to find any to add at this time. Hahelen (talk) 03:43, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
Adding more information
[edit]I decided to revisit this beetle for my second assignment for my Behavioral Ecology class. This time I added some general description (anatomy and sexual dimorphism), more on the geographic range, inheritance of life history traits, genetics, mate choice, physiology (olfaction, gustation, diapause), and pest control. [edit]I really enjoyed reading your Wikipedia article! The information on the C. bowringi is very thorough and well-researched! In the opening section, the sentence “C. bowringi is often studied for the highly specific mating behavior it exhibits” is changed to “C. bowringi is often studied for its highly specific mating behavior” to make the sentence more concise. The words “mating incompatibility” is changed to “incompatible mating”. These changes improve readability and clarity for the readers. A Wikipedia article is linked to the words “dimorphic” so the readers could better understand these words. In the Anatomy subsection, which is under the Description section, a Wikipedia article is linked to the words “elytra”, “proboscis”, “olfaction”, “gustation”, “alimentary canal”, “midgut”, “microvilli”, “enzymes”, “proteases”, “hydrolyze”, and “proteins” so the readers could better understand these complex words and can visualize what these words look like by looking at the pictures in the linked article. In the Genetics section, there may be more information about the genes in the beetle. Adding more information of genes can provide readers with a more comprehensive understanding of the genetic aspects of Colaphellus bowringi. In the Sexual dimorphism subsection, which is under the Description section, a Wikipedia article is linked to the words “ventral” and “abdomen” for better comprehension. In the sentence “Colaphellus bowringi’s patterns in sexual size dimorphism follow Rensch’s rule,” a Wikipedia article is linked to Rensch’s rule. These links aid readers in understanding key concepts mentioned in the article. A picture of the Xiushui County is added and a caption is written to enhance reader engagement and understanding of the geographical locations mentioned in the article. Chri Ye (talk) 02:20, 12 April 2024 (UTC)This Wiki page does an excellent job on explaining different categories of information about the cabbage beetle. It covers a wide range and is well written with many useful details. I added one paragraph for the leading section to include a summary about the ovary development and oviposition process. I also added two brief sentences talking about the pest control strategy. I deleted some information in the Pest Control section. While the whole section is very detailed, it contains information that might be too specific and complicated for readers who are not specialists in this area. It mentions how the signaling pathway works as a pest control method and there are many complex terms. It might be better to simplify the information in the sections of Mating Regulation and Interaction with humans to make the page more accessible to the public.
