Something in the media
[edit]Schools are often in the media. These don't always make it into the encyclopedia because they aren't really that notable. So it is with some kid over 18 who made a porn movie outside of school. A big yawner. Nothing to do with school on a permanent basis. Will be mostly forgotten by next week. Student7 (talk) 00:20, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
- Note: I copied the following comment from a talk page, so all discussion of this topic will be in one place. - Spanachan (talk) 14:04, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
- The problem here is not proving that it was in the media someplace, but that his performance outside the school directly led to his suspension inside the school. Big stuff on a slow news day. And most days are slow news days because it is rare when something happens worth reporting. This isn't. As far as anyone knows officially, a student who fought in school was suspended. Happens dozens of times a year. He wants to claim that the school was biased: his sexual preference, his religious belief, he is Muslim, he is cross-eyed: whatever works. But nothing will work. Just makes headlines. Headlines are not necessarily encyclopedic. In fact, they usually aren't. Student7 (talk) 01:39, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
- The event we're debating for inclusion in the article is not "Cocoa student makes gay-for-pay videos" but "Cocoa administration suspends student, allegedly for making blue movies off-campus". Do a Google News search for "Robert Marucci", and the headlines you'll find all refer to the suspension and reinstatement: "can return to school", "coming back to school", "kicked out of high school", etc., etc. Since the actions of school officials gave rise to this controversy, it's appropriate to include it in the school article.
- Student7, are you letting your own views of this case affect your editing decisions? You say "a student who fought in school", but adding "fighting" to the Google News search for Marucci's name only leads to one link, about how he's fighting the suspension. None of the sources cited in the article suggests that he was fighting, and the school spokeswoman justified the suspension with some vague talk of "safety and security issues".[1] Moreover, your edit summary at User talk:63.235.181.14 is "his claim of bias had not held up to get him unsuspended", but in fact he was allowed to return to school after a week. You seem to have rejected out of hand the possibility that Marucci was the victim of unjust or arbitrary action by the school administration. I'm not saying that it's so, and I tried to phrase the paragraph in the article as neutrally as possible, giving both Marucci's and the administration's positions. Your arguments for removing the material from the article altogether suggest that you've rejected Marucci's claims and embraced the adminstration's. - Spanachan (talk) 14:49, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
- We agree about the issue about making videos off campus. What you disagree about and media pretends to, is whether he was suspended for this work, or whether he was suspended for fighting (security issue or whatever) with other students. So far, the fact remains that he was suspended for fighting (or whatever) with other students. If and when the student can demonstrate (or maybe tries to) that it is his work that caused the suspension, either by bringing it to the attention of the School Board or by bringing it to court, maybe it becomes an issue then. Right now, it seems more a matter of a student trying to find something to keep the authorities from suspending him by getting media attention. Frankly I don't see this working, but it might. When we get "Billy Joe vs School Board" as an article, it becomes history when the decision is handed down. See, for example, Palm_Bay_High_School#History. I think this is in several places. But this latter is important. Someone claiming something without something/someone backing him up is typical. Happens hundreds of times a year in Brevard alone. The graduation/cross thing was exceptional. There are only a few of those in history.
- What's in there now is what we call "police blotter" stuff, except it is "principal's blotter" I suppose. We don't record every complaint about every student nor every complaint a student has. By putting in unimportant claims we trivialize Wikipedia which is supposed to be an encyclopedia, not a journal, or a list of complaints. Student7 (talk) 15:39, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
- "Happens hundreds of times a year in Brevard alone." How many of those hundreds of times are covered by Florida, national, and international media? Most of those hundreds of cases do not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. This one does, with significant coverage in many reliable indpendent sources. That coverage distinguishes this case from those hundreds of others.
- "What you disagree about..." I don't disagree about why Marucci was suspended, because I don't have an opinion on why Marucci was suspended. I tried to write the passage in as neutral a fashion as I could, presenting both Marucci's and the administration's positions.
- "...and media pretends to..." This sounds like you're putting your opinion in place of our reliable independent secondary sources, doesn't it? Spanachan (talk) 06:13, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
