[edit]Although Sarah Caudwell Cockburn has her own wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Caudwell with a cross reference to this article, she does not seem to appear here. She was a British legal scholar and author (as Sarah Caudwell). She once told me that she was related to the character actor Charles Coburn (an American whose family spelled the name as it was pronounced, without the "ck").Jim Stinson (talk) 19:02, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
I added a link to Sarah Cockburn, noting that she used the pseudonym Sarah Caudwell. She definitely needs an entry in this article. BFCockburn (talk) 13:02, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
I propose that the links to notable Coburns, as they appear in the Coburn (surname) article, be integrated into the list of notable Cockburns in this article. Cockburns and Coburns are all from the same family--only the spelling is slightly different. The Coburn (surname) article should be maintained, as it is now, with just a list of Coburns and a link back to the main Cockburn (surname) article. 68.149.139.157 (talk) 15:25, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Cockburn is it not actually an anglicised version of coch old Welsh for red?
[edit]The name Cock has been adopted but I believe it should be Coch old Welsh for red. Given the sand stone in the area where the name originates is red and a red burn makes far more sense than a cocc burn. If any scholars could come back with evidence to the contrary I'd be happy to discuss. The village of Cockburnspath is literally the path by the red burn. Not so red nowadays but typically was in the past. Red sandstone cut through by the burn

Do not mention the humorous aspect of the name!
[edit]Since anything goes on the Talk pages, I'm going to throw this here: My Surname Is Cockburn And It's A Wee Bit Funny | HuffPost Australia Life
Disclaimer: In no way, shape or form do I suggest or recommend adding anything from that page or mentioning about the hilarity of the name :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agent007bond (talk • contribs) 23:52, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
