Peadar Bates
[edit]The Life of Charles Cobbe 1781-1857 Dublin 2007 9780954910358 family tree on p9ish appears to indicate archbishop Cobbe as the first of the Cobbes in Ireland. Is this correct? In ictu oculi (talk) 13:10, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Their were Cobbes living in the South east (where I am from) and the west before the 1700's, I'm not sure since when but probably a long while before then. Their are many Cobbes not descended directly from the new bridge lot — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.24.100.216 (talk) 02:59, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, I've no reason to think you're not right, but this is an encyclopaedia, and the issue is can you provide any evidence for this? If not a printed source like Peadar Bates, then Ancestry.com? A parish register? A gravestone? Even a scribble in a family Bible? If they existed prior to the Winchester Cobbe family's arrival in Ireland in 1717, there should be some tangible source. Reasonably if you can't find anything within a week or so it'll have to go back to agree with printed sources. In ictu oculi (talk) 13:47, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
- The text following ref The pursuit of the heiress: aristocratic marriage in Ireland 1740-1840 A. P. W. Malcomson 2006 "The family which most resembles the Stewarts is the very differently circumstanced Cobbe family of Newbridge, Donabate, Co. Dublin.178 Its founder in Ireland was the Rev. Charles Cobbe (1686-1765), who came over as a viceregal chaplain ... " was removed. I have restored it since it agrees with Paedar Bates 2007, the source removed. At this point there should soon be some hard source evidence that both printed sources, Malcomson 2006 and Bates 2007, are incorrect in assigning an English origin to the Cobbe family. Otherwise WP:RS should prevail over anecdotal evidence. In ictu oculi (talk) 03:53, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
- After a bit of digging around have added a host of other sources all showing the Cobbe family originates from Richard Cobbe of Cromwell's short parliament, so sorry, Paedar Bates ref restored. In ictu oculi (talk) 05:56, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
