Merge info from ADHD coaching

The subject of the article does not really warrant its own article and is a better fit as a subsection of "Types of coaching". Flowanda | Talk 20:17, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

ADHD coaching is different than life coaching because the skill and knowledge base re: ADHD is unique. In addition, people with ADHD who are seeking support do not look for a life coach they look for an ADHD coach. By moving it, you are making it so people can't find resources. Freerangemom (talk) 00:17, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

In the context of an encyclopedia, it makes no more sense to have a separate article for "ADHD coaching" than to separate "science teachers" from "French teachers" instead of having an entry for "teachers." I don't even know if it makes sense to categorize it as a "type" of coaching. "Professors" and "kindergarten teachers" are types of teachers. It would be silly to list every possible subject a teacher might cover as a type of teaching. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.227.171.187 (talk) 23:10, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Support Merge I agree with Flowanda. It is ridiculous in my opinion to have an article on ADHD coaching. The sheer number of "unique" problems that coaching lends itself to means little difference in the coaching itself. I agree that it fits better as a subsection of Types of Coaching.--Kiyarrlls-talk 19:50, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Strongly Oppose Life coaching does not deal with psychological issues, but this is one of the major problems that ADHD coaching has to deal with, as well as the neurological problems that cause other problems for someone with the set of learning problems caused by ADD. The techniques of normal coaching are not of much value to someone with ADD/ADHD. Contrary wise, ADHD/ADD coaching would not be especially useful to a "normal".htom (talk) 04:09, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Support Merge and merged per BOLD--Hu12 (talk) 18:45, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

I truly wish you hadn't done that. What you've said not only needs references, but is wrong. I suggest that you revert the merge and put the original article back. htom (talk) 20:26, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Unitive coaching

The section on Unitive coaching was removed because the information was not sourced. Although some of the other subsections are also unsourced, the terms and definitions are perhaps more recognizable. Before removing the section, I did try to find reliable sources that could be used to verify the information, but could find little more than articles submitted to free article directories. If there are sources that can help independently verify unitive ooaching, please list them here or provide other editors with info so we can help with sourcing. Flowanda | Talk 23:02, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Nice work! I doubt there are any sources, the other types of coaching are similarly bereft.--Kiyarrlls-talk 16:39, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Please do not merge

It is very difficult for add/adhd patients to find information, as it is. This topic is in need of more information, which I could help provide if I wen't so busy at this time. A suggestion for sources is the website of adult ADD sufferes at addforum.com. It's very busy and collectively, the people there have likely read and own many books to site sources. Having ADD, I can't remember sources, but can verify some. I know my friends on the forum could also assist. I will try to get some to support this page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.81.48.105 (talk) 08:05, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Independent discipline

The claims to coaching now being an independent discipline are arguable. While it is true that there has been an explosion in coaching, in the training of coaches by universities and training organisations, in coaching as a form of soft training within organisations, etc, there remains a bedrock of coaching on which this is built that began 150 years ago. I have tried to rebalance the article to make this fact apparent to a casual reader and to provide a broader description that accomodates the many approaches to and venues of coaching. However the article needs a major cleanup to eliminate the opinions currently expressed, or to identify them as such, and to make the article more of a compilation of verifiable facts rather than a collection of unattributed theoretical positions. I have made a start which hopefully serves to help the reader gain an overview and then contextualise the rest of the article. LookingGlass (talk) 17:21, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

career coaching

There isn't a section on career coaching. Should one be added or is it covered elsewhere on Wiki? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dodoandthetoymaker (talkcontribs) 08:48, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

"reads like a news release"

"This article or section reads like a news release, or is otherwise written in an overly promotional tone." On the life coaching section, this warning exists. I do not understand as it seems ok to me. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can help. 70.36.182.57 (talk) 17:15, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

I agree with this question. It does not appear to be promotional — Preceding unsigned comment added by Freerangemom (talkcontribs) 00:24, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

I disagree the article is clearly promotional towards the life/business coach industry. I think it would be good if an historian of business could describe the development of this industry.Alnpete (talk) 09:14, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Translations

The various translations for this page are horrifically different. Someone needs to work through them for sake of homogeneity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.24.40.3 (talk) 11:25, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Tidy up

Just had a crack at cleaning this article up a bit - I'm amazed it's managed to stay this bad for so long! I've fixed some links, removed some year-old uncited material, added a bunch of citation tags for other unsourced stuff, tried to adjust the style so it reads less like a personal essay and changed the section order around a bit (although I still think Sports Coaching should be higher in the listings).

Among other deletions, I plucked out this chunk of text:

Although the role of coach has changed over time, some examples of research papers on business coaching show that between the late 1930s and the late 1960s, some forms of internal coaching in organizations were already informally present; i.e. managers (or supervisors) also acted as coaches to their staff (cf. Zeus & Skiffington, 2002; Grant, 2003a; 2006). Gorby (1937)

Although sources are cited, without a bibliography I can't easily work out what the refs are. if someone knows or can find out, this could be added back in.

Frankly I can't be arsed to do any more work on this today. Your turn, other editors! Yunshui (talk) 09:59, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

I removed a paragraph from the introduction because it seemed specific to the origin of coaching in sports and the bulk of the article doesn't pertain to sports. I moved it to the origin section, hoping it would add to the organization of the article, if not the quality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Onewheeljoe (talkcontribs) 20:36, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

I will be editing/adding new material to the coaching page as part of my History & Systems of Psychology course at Shenandoah University, in conjunction with the APS Wikipedia Initiative. Here are four of the references that I will be working with.

Merge

Why the merging of articles in to this one? I can't see any discussion of this anywhere, so I'll look around some more and if none is to be found I'll start reverting. Mathmo Talk 08:10, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

The discussion can be found at Talk:Life & Personal Development Coaching#Merger proposal. Life & Personal Development coaching itself was successfully merged into Life Coaching in December 2007 as is shown here. However, it appears that consesus was not achieved for merging the various types of coaching into Coaching, as the only comments leading up to the merge are objections to the merge. In addition, significant information from the old Life coaching article seems to have been lost during its merge into Coaching. (The same may be true for the other merges; I haven't checked.) For these reasons, I certainly support reviving the old Life coaching article, and maybe the other coaching articles as well. Riick (talk) 21:05, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah man, the "Dating Coaching" section is mostly swiped from the main article, dating coach. This duplicate material should be removed and cleaned up, but I'm certainly not going to do it. 23:05, 14 May 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.150.225.214 (talk)

Why a "dating coach" entry? - Why not something like "coaches help clients acquire and refine life and professional skills, ranging from dating to getting tenure to getting a promotion or launching a business"? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.227.171.187 (talk) 23:12, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Having been coached & just taken a coaching certification course as well, I strongly suggest breaking this article up. Coaching is something that is generic in nature; it can be applied to almost any activity in which someone wants to get results or change in. Consequently, this article will bloat and become unmaintainable as more people want [pick your type of coaching here] to be added. Coaching is a growing trend worldwide, so this WILL happen. As that goes on, it is neither possible nor ethical to claim some applications of coaching belong here and others do not, or more than others (say, career coaching vs. personal coaching vs coaching on growing carrots). Furthermore, some applications are more close to another (personal coaching and life coaching) whereas some are more distinct (financial coaching vs. coaching on growing carrots). Let all flowers flourish, but not on the same page; applications of coaching to various domains or activities should all have their own pages with information specific to each application. Business Coaching NPOV and Notability

Even though no specific service provider or company is mentioned, this section is infected with words and phrases that basically make a mockery out of the principle of NPOV. It uses the same language that one would find in an advertisement for a business coaching service. Here is just one example: "Coaching is an excellent way to attain a certain work behavior that will improve leadership, employee accountability, teamwork, sales, communication, goal setting, strategic planning and more". I did a Google search for that very phrase and I found it at these URLs:

…and over 84,000 [1]. Now either this text that is currently in the Wikipedia article is so excellently fabulous, that everybody who is offering business coaching services (most of them being in Australia, it would appear from the URLs), wants to copy it, or, it is far more likely, somebody who added this silly section to this article copied it off of his own company's web site for SEO purposes. Really, there are no sources about this topic online other than the web sites of people who offer such services. This is the sort of thing that is banned at Wikipedia. Given that it is not clear exactly what business coaches do, and that there are no positive testimonials to what they do anywhere outside of the web sites of the service providers themselves, this section might work best if it was merged to an article about business scams or something similar, but only after it has been extensively re-written. One thing is certain, however, material such as this has no business being on Wikipedia.—A lizard (talk) 21:10, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Business Coaching may have enough Notability -

The one above was a web search; a Google Scholar search however, returns 1,100 results; 75 of them have "business coaching" in the title. There is a scholarly journal on business coaching, "The journal of evidence based coaching". I do agree however, that that section needs to be rewritten to ensure NPOV, provide reliable references and describe the various kinds of business coaching. josei (talk) 23:36, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

the journal of evidence based coaching does not exist. i agree that Buz/life coaching should be considered a scam but it is notable as are ponzi schemes and that topic has an article but it is made clear that it is a scam. The fact that many fall for a scam or that many profit from it does not make it less of a scam.Alnpete (talk) 09:23, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Alnpete (talk) 09:24, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
