Article for Deletion/Improving this Page

[edit]

The Cluster of Excellence page was nominated for deletion for the second time after 2015. We understand this as constructive criticism and we will try to improve the article step by step, as there is certainly room for improvement (esp. notability, external sources, scientific achievements).

We would therefore suggest repealing the request for deletion and instead change it into an editing process with constructive criticism and discussion on this page. Our further suggestions concerning the topics for the AFD:

The Cluster is not a research program in a single university. As stated in the first paragraph, it is a research network funded by the German Federal State within the Excellence Initiative. It is not just a university department: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Common_outcomes#Parts_of_schools_and_school-related_organizations

Please see other pages of German Clusters of Excellence here for reference.

The references and sources have been topic of discussion in the first AFD voting with no consensus for or against deletion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Cluster_of_Excellence_%22Asia_and_Europe_in_a_Global_Context%22

Though the page is available in eight languages, the English version, along with the German article, is visited most frequently.

We are looking forward to contributions and thoughts on this topic. Thank you for your feedback and we are happy to work with all of you on the page!

Kind regards,

Ideally, when a topic is notable enough, third party volunteers create and maintain the article for it, with involved parties (who have a conflict of interest) only being able to suggest changes on the talk page (other than minor non-controversial modifications). It is a more difficult road otherwise, as uninterested volunteers are likely to submit the article for deletion rather than spend the time to improve it, unfortunately. — PaleoNeonate — 16:44, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear PaleoNeonate,
thank you very much for your feedback. It is our hope that other authors on the WP will help us improve this article and would also be happy to help with suggestions, of course. Kjc hd (talk) 08:39, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Status and Advice

[edit]
I withdrew the AfD, because the sources mentioned in the earlier AfD are sufficient to shown notability . But they must be added, and should have been added at the time, 2 years ago. It is necessary to have references providing substantial coverage from third-party independent reliable sources, not press releases or mere announcements . Everything in the article at present is a press release or from their own web site.
From the material on the enWP page at present, there is no indication that it is not at a single university. It is centrally funded, but everything appears to take place at Heidelberg--or at least that's the way the article now reads. Checking the deWP article, this seems indeed to be the case. All parts of the Cluster are at Heidelberg or its branch campus. That it cooperates with other institutions does not make it an inter-iuniversity project. With respect to the German article, it too is based almost entirely on press releases, though there is some third party material. Additionally, it reads like a web page for the organization, not a WP article. An article in the English WP must be written from a Neutral point of view--the perspective of outsides--not what the organization would say about itself, but what others would say about it. (It is my impression that , while the deWP has the same policies, they interpret them a little differently).
There's an even more important problem: some of the material here is almost identical to what's on the web site. This is not acceptable. We can not use it here without a full free license under the formalities of WP:DCM, which irrevocably permits anyone in the world for using , modify, and distributing it for any purpose, even commercial. If you own the material, you can license it. But that is not advised, for material on a website is usually written in a different manner, and is generally not suitable for an encyclopedia. It is much better to rewrite.
If you are in some way connected with the organization, you must specify this, according to our policy on conflict of itnerest WP:COI. If this connection is in any way financial, you must say so, as specified there. Again, our policy is interpreted somewhat more strictly than in the German WP.
As you mention the other pages are very similar, and we shall need to improve them also. DGG ( talk ) 18:06, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear DGG,
Thank you very much for withdrawing the AfD and the information you gave us. We are still beginners in Wikipedia and it is always great for us to see how helpful everybody is. We will include the references mentioned above and also work on the language of the article. We agree that this should have happened two years ago already and take care of it as soon as possible.
