Monetary Value

Does anyone have a link to how much Cliver Palmer is actually worth? There's a link in the main article that states he was valued at $3.5 M by BRW. I can't get access to the BRW articles on this as I'm not a member of the site. Can anyone find any good references? 211.31.40.166 (talk) 05:45, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

His companies aren't publicly listed so its only conjecture. - Shiftchange (talk) 16:53, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
Indented line

The previous estimate of AU$8 billion was referenced incorrectly and linked to the 2010 Forbes estimated value of US$600 million. This was updated to the 2012 Forbes estimate of US$795 million as of January 2012. If there are any more recent and properly referenced estimates then please use them. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2012/78/australia-billionaires-12_Clive-Palmer_P96W.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulgw (talkcontribs) 07:11, 22 August 2012 (UTC) Palmer is often referred to as a billionaire. However millionaire would appear to be more plausible.203.184.41.226 (talk) 07:47, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Palmer's interests are all Pty Ltd so it's between him and the ATO. He's now the member for Fairfax elect, so he'll need to disclose all interests. These may or may not be made public.220.244.246.139 (talk) 10:44, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Inclusion of commentary

Considering that Palmer is neither a politician nor a candidate isn't providing details of his conspiracy theories or political ambition giving them undue weight. His point of view is not widely supported nor is the initial response to his pre-selection positive. This article is too news-like and like a diary. I don't see why an encyclopedia should document his verbal contrivances. - Shiftchange (talk) 07:17, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

What does his preselection have to do with the undue tag of his conspiracy belief? At any rate, hes a notable figure and with his contract to get the chinese navy to escort his Titanic II its more notable in his US views. Now that hes running, the anti-us stand is more notable and could change direction of poicy if he beats the treasurer. what with the leftist labour signing an agreement for troops in darwin and he standing for lib-natl...then again could be politics at work with the minorty coalition partner to attack(Lihaas (talk) 20:29, 30 April 2012 (UTC)).
I should of separated the discussion of the two topics. First his CIA/greens conspiracy claims was plainly ridiculous. It was given no credence, described as reckless and hinted by himself that it was an election distraction ploy. It bears no significance. In 30 years nobody will care less about the stupid remarks because the matter is trivial. It doesn't belong in an encyclopedia. We aren't here to report news, track minor celebrity actions or be a diary of events for people.
Regarding the other matter, his expressing his intention to be a candidate in the Division of Liley is not notable for the same reasons. Lets imagine he doesn't get pre-selected. Documenting his intentions is a triviality. It doesn't mean much beyond his personal, political ambitions, assuming he is not making it up. The topic is only of importance if he does get selected. - Shiftchange (talk) 09:08, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Im not sure of the details but if some RS source indicates as you did such as it was a political no-matter then by all means well remove it
However, his intention to run for office is certainly notable...it shows he has political intent and can try again if he fails this time...perhaps from another division.(Lihaas (talk) 10:03, 1 May 2012 (UTC)).
Purely sepculative but after looking at the ABC Lateline programme he appeared on the other night he seems to be very much modelling himself after Republican candidates in the US. Perhaps he's been watching too much TV? 114.111.151.37 (talk) 07:13, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
He has been involved in politics for 40 years, and has recently founded a political party. I think that he qualifies to be called a politician.203.184.41.226 (talk) 07:46, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Source of wealth?

So I'm gathering he was born a rich kid and has been trained and reared by rich parents and has remained rich and become more rich? Is that correct? Can somebody expand on that? 114.111.151.37 (talk) 07:13, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

There is virtually nothing about his background. Surely someone in Australia could add some details.203.184.41.226 (talk) 07:47, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
Check out ABC TV, Annabelle Crabbs' 'Kitchen Cabinet'. I saw that yesterday and was astonished about the mentioning of his parents' visit with him in China in 1962, yes 1962. There he also met Mao and Tchou En Lai. Thinking about that I thought the key may have been in his father's connection to the US (touring his movie there in 1927). 1962 was the year when the Vietnam conflict that led to the war was fermenting. I would see that under the umbrella of secret Vietnam negotiations which used an Australian citizen and a family visit as cover up. All that cost money. Whether anyone wanted to prevent the Vietnam War or just sus the Chinese out, who knows. Theoretically, the Chinese ought to publish what they have in the archives. 121.209.56.39 (talk) 03:25, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Just found this one: http://www.aww.com.au/news-features/news-stories/2014/9/flashback-clive-palmer-12-in-the-weekly-in-1967/ His father was one really successful and well connected travel agent. The info of 1964 in the weekly and 1962 what he said himself on TV is not mutually exclusive. 121.209.56.39 (talk) 03:52, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

According to his own accounts, he started off as a cleaner, sleeping in the warehouses that he cleaned during the night. His next job was a trainee at a realty agency, where he was soon making serious money. In those days agencies turned over large numbers of trainees, with their own cars, and very few lasted more than several days. Since they worked on commission, few were paid for their short service, and they were only taken on to cover a busy period. Palmer was a good enough salesman to stay in the job.220.244.246.139 (talk) 10:55, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Announcement

We aren't here to document Palmers's announcements, tweet or intentions. We don't report the news and we aren't a crystal ball. We don't need endless details of his projects on this article either. Let's stick to significant facts about the man. - Shiftchange (talk) 10:35, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Clive Palmer (businessman)Clive Palmer – and delete the disambiguation page currently at Clive Palmer per WP:TWODABS ("If there are only two topics to which a given title might refer, and one is the primary topic, then a disambiguation page is not needed—it is sufficient to use a hatnote...") Due to the results of the latest election, it is likely that the notability of this Clive Palmer, the businessman and politician has eclipsed that of Clive Palmer (musician).[1] If others do not agree, consider the suitability of the "(businessman)" disambiguator and the possibility of changing it due to Palmer's new source of notability. —  AjaxSmack  14:33, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

MP

Why is Palmer listed as MP. He is not been declared the winner and a recount is still in process http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-30/clive-palmer-still-ahead-in-fairfax-recount/4989892 LibStar (talk) 10:37, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

"Declared the winner" is precisely what he has been,[2][3] but nothing more than that. The "assumed office" thing in the infobox is silly. But I think it's appropriate that we follow the sources. StAnselm (talk) 10:49, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Not declared by the AEC to this point. Declared in this context is an official determination that a clear winner has been found. [4] Hack (talk) 11:01, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Charity and other activities

The one single "act of charity" mentioned is hosting (not paying for) a buffet lunch for 650 disadvantaged people. If that's all he's ever done it doesn't merit the word charity in the heading, which gives undue emphasis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.76.88.46 (talk) 12:55, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

I think he did pay for it, but otherwise I agree that "charity" doesn't belong in the heading, so I've removed it. Mitch Ames (talk) 12:59, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

How and where to add Palmer's 150 cars/AMEP?

Re Ricky Muir/AMEP - "The alliance could prove powerful for motoring enthusiasts as Mr Palmer is also known as a massive petrol head and has a 150-car collection worth more than $20 million"[5] - the noteworthiness and inclusion factor is beyond doubt, but how and where do add? Here or the PUP article, or both? Timeshift (talk) 06:45, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

I'd go with both, but more detail in the PUP article. It only needs a sentence here. Frickeg (talk) 07:01, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
"Massive petrol head". Is that NPOV? Hack (talk) 07:40, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
That's The Australian for you. We certainly wouldn't use that wording. Timeshift (talk) 09:43, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Liberal Movement and LCL split in SA and Clive's involvement in it

If anyone can get more info on Palmer's involvement in the Liberal Movement[6][7] it would be very much welcome! As it stands, this article needs more than a vague sentence on the subject. Timeshift (talk) 01:40, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

I wondered about that, too. He was also very young in the 70s to cause whatever shake-up it was. On the whole, I think the long string of colourful events are indeed somewhat helpful to understand what's cooking, because big things are cooking at the moment = budget issues, China comments on ABC's Q & A. The way the government was falling over themselves to apologize for Australia is even historic. It is also bizarre, what Palmer trigered here. One day our 'rulers' talk of containing China, and the next day when someone expresses that in his own even though exaggerated words, they apologize profusely. I do miss what his parents were, yes. It is often telling. 121.209.56.25 (talk) 05:51, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
It appears to be rather significant exaggeration on Palmer's part. This article (in the Australian, but quoting reliable people) basically says that the big players in the LM, in general, had no idea who he was. Frickeg (talk) 08:31, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Nick Xenophon/Clive Palmer spat - inclusion of some sort?

Palmer seems to be rather consistently nasty in his remarks about Xenophon, should something be added somewhere? - [8][9][10][11] - just two Palmer snippets: "Nick Xenophon should give himself an uppercut. I understand Nick Xenophon does not have the balance of power, he's belting his head right now against the bathroom door and he's looking at how it's affecting his hair. I forgive Nick Xenophon for his Brylcreem and his hair dryer. He's got the blackest hair, you'd think he's an Asian." and "It (the PUP-AMEP agreement) was released on Christmas Day, but he (Xenophon) didn't get a chance to come and see it, he was down in South Australia all day, the poor old bastard." Timeshift (talk) 19:35, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Operating efficiency disputed

The article currently reads:

Palmer and his management team have improved efficiency with the cost of nickel dropping from over $7 per pound to around $3.70 per pound

That's not what the Voluntary Administrators say in the report! See the screenshot above with a very small excerpt from that report which shows that operating costs have increased since mid October 2015.

I'm gong to remove this claim. It should either be reworded, or a source given to prove that efficiencies have improved.

Also: the company in question is now owned under a joint venture between two of Clive Palmer's companies: QNI Minerals and QNI Resources. Check the ASIC records if you need this confirmed. - Letsbefiends (talk) 05:09, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

The screenshot is here: File:Administrators_report_Queensland_Nickel_-_increased_cost_of_production.png - I should have linked to it not inlined it per the policy. - Letsbefiends (talk) 08:28, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

Michael Palmer - should he be on the personal section?

I'd like to get everyone's opinion on an edit to this article;

I personally believe that as Michael Palmer ran for office, both as an MP for Nudgee in 2009 then as a member of the PUP, he is a notable person in his own right and should be included in this article.

HiLo48 thought a sentence I added about Michael's properties was irrelevant, so I propose this addition: Michael Palmer (born February 27th 1990) has held numerous positions across Palmer's companies, including; Waratah Coal, Australian Resources and Queensland Nickel. In 2009, he won preselection in the northside seat of Nudgee, seeking to become the state's youngest ever MP. He currently manages a portfolio of real-estate assets.

Flaminggoose, 07/08/18 Flaminggoose (talk) 16:02, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

You need to establish that there is significant coverage in reliable sources. One article in a non-national newspaper does not come anywhere neare establishing this. The realestate.com article is nothing like a reliable source. Pay attention to WP:POLITICIAN. - Nick Thorne talk 00:33, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

NPOV

This article seems, at best, very out of date given that it doesn't cover the problems with several of Palmer's business ventures - most notably the Queensland Nickel Refinery. I've added some material on this. Nick-D (talk) 10:19, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

It also neglects his party's failure to win any seats in the 2019 Australian federal election, despite spending an estimated $60m on advertising - more than the two main parties put together. Errantius (talk) 06:18, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Source of wealth

Palmer's father is stated to have been a travel agent. Presumably Palmer must therefore have established his mineral interests from scratch. There is no explanation for his wealth.Royalcourtier (talk) 10:48, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

Surely there's gotta be a section included about old Clivedawg being a full time memer now that he's no longer pretending to do politics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.214.176.185 (talk) 15:48, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

I think this archived clip of an interview in the 1980s gives some explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM9I7cfmjbM remember he was a real estate agent on the Gold Coast in the 1970s/1980s and that whole area is the product of dodgy deals done with mates of the Nationals and Joh, I think he was involved in that. LamontCranston (talk) 04:46, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

I removed the description of Palmer making a threat from the lead (and expanded the corresponding section further down). It was reverted a week later with no explanation. I am about to reinstate my version, but need consensus here for further reverts. --Scott Davis Talk 10:55, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

@Errantius: [12] So, you want to change MOS:CREDENTIAL? It says, Academic and professional titles (such as "Dr." or "Professor"), including honorary ones, should be used in a Wikipedia article only when the subject is widely known by a pseudonym or stage name containing such a title (whether earned or not).

Until you succeed in changing the guideline, the "Dr" should stay out. --Hob Gadling (talk) 13:47, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
