Common Name
[edit]The common name for this fish has been changed to Koaro from Climbing galaxias. Justification apparently is that this is the name used by Fishbase.
Koarao is a maori name not used outside New Zealand. This species has an extensive range within Australia, easily exceeding the total land mass of New Zealand. I contend that it is more appropriate to use the generic English term Climbing galaxias for this species, regardless of what Fishbase currently says. The name Climbing galaxias is also descriptive of one of the main characteristic features of this fish, its ability to climb verticle rock surfaces and hence overcome obstacles to upstream movement.

Any thoughts before I change it back. Nick Thorne 02:57, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Go for it, Nick. My only rationale in changing the name to koaro was to conform to Fishbase (which was confirmed by NIWA). I had been informed by an Administrator that Wikipedia followed Fishbase exclusively, so thanks for pointing out that this is not always the case. Common sense prevails! Happy to make the changes for you, Nick, unless you'd prefer to do them yourself. BTW, while we're at it, are there any more NZ/Aust fish that need the names fixed? Just had a reread of the article - the distribution, in Australia, differs quite a bit between the first para & the Distribution section. Maybe we could simplify the first para to just mentioning the 2 countries, & the Distribution can go into the detail. What are your thoughts? GrahamBould 08:19, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
- Note that we don't follow FishBase exclusively for common names (e.g. parore, dover sole). We use it as a guideline if in doubt. Gdr 10:42, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
I'll make the change, Graham, since I'm in here at the moment. I'm not currently aware of any other conflicts, after all there are not really all that many freshwater species in common between NZ and Aus.Nick Thorne 22:28, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
