Suggestion on new sub topic (Impacts )
[edit]ClaireBD (talk · contribs) I will be moving the information you added to sub topic (Impacts ) to under context , I believe it is more appropriate there. A new sub topic (Impacts ) is not necessary since there is existing sub topic (Economic impacts ). Gbadegesin Muhammed (talk) 15:15, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
Removed a sentence about 1 degree warmer
[edit]I couldn't find a reference for this sentence that was in the lead, so I have removed it for now: "Temperatures have already increased by 1 degree Celsius due to climate change." EMsmile (talk) 16:34, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

- Comment: This article was created/expanded (previously it was just a redirect which had been placed in 2018) as part of the Wiki4Climate edit-a-thon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Online_edit-a-thon_on_climate_change_-_November_2020 . Most of the work has been done by a novice editor, Gbadegesin Muhammed.

- @EMsmile: This interesting article is new enough and long enough. The hook facts for ALT0 and ALT1 are cited inline, and the article is neutral. Unfortunately the article contains significant amounts of close paraphrasing. I rewrote one sentence that showed up with the Earwig tool, but then found other examples. The paragraph on tea for example includes "Sustainability of the industry is thus crucial to the country’s socio-economic well-being and development", which is lifted straight from the source. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:59, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Cwmhiraeth: thank you for pointing that out. I wasn't aware of that - most of the work was done by Gbadegesin Muhammed but also some others during the Wiki4Climate edit-a-thon. I should have checked with the tool myself. We'll work on that issue. Is there a time frame by which we have to have improved it by? EMsmile (talk) 16:26, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
- Cwmhiraeth, I noticed the close paraphrasing myself when discussing the nomination of this article with EMsmile. I've done some copyediting without looking at the sources (apologies for not managing to do it before the review), for grammar and flow, and currently earwig isn't pulling up too much. CMD (talk) 16:54, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
- Bah I've found some egregious examples that earwig isn't picking up. This will require a thorough check. CMD (talk) 17:04, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
- @EMsmile: Thank you both. There is no particular time frame for sorting it out, but ideally, each paragraph should be compared with its source. That's how I noticed the paragraph about tea. New editors don't always understand about copyright. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:23, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
- @EMsmile and Cwmhiraeth: Gone through the article. Wouldn't say no to some double-checking/spot-checking if possible, but I think I've at least got most of it. CMD (talk) 16:35, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Chipmunkdavis:, thanks so much. I know that @PlanetCare: is also tackling this article these days. We discussed (in the Wiki4Climate Slack channel) the idea of using more of the standard structure that was proposed by WikiProject Climate Change. So hopefully it will continue to improve over the course of the week. EMsmile (talk) 06:01, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

- Reviewer needed to see whether the previous issues have been addressed and the article as revised meets the DYK criteria. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:48, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- I checked with earwig and it appears that the paraphasing has been dealt with. --evrik (talk) 21:39, 23 January 2021 (UTC)
Applying standard headings
[edit]I suggest we modify the structure of this article so that it follows the standard headings that are outlined here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Climate_change/Style_guide. Namely:
- Lede
- the lede section should summarize the topic and each of the following sections
- Emissions
- details on how the geographic area contributes to climate change, including energy consumption, transportation, industry and fossil fuel production
- Environmental changes (observed/projected)
- impact of climate change on the natural environment of the geography, including observed/projected temperature changes, sea level rise, impact on water resources, weather and extreme weather, and ecosystems (coast, forest, animals, etc)
- Impacts on humans
- impact of climate change on people in the geography, including economic impacts on various industries including agriculture, fisheries and tourism; impact on cities and urban environments in the geography; socioeconomic impacts including migration; health impacts
- Responses
- mitigation efforts, including governmental efforts, law and policy; municipal responses in the geography; industry and private sector responses; and public response, including citizen action.
- See also
- Include "Energy in..." and "Environment in..." articles if they exist
In particular, I don't think that these two should be Level 1 headings:
- Deforestation statistics in Kenya
- Present and future Köppen-Geiger climate classification maps EMsmile (talk) 05:31, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
I could work on revisions to use the standard headings if that's OK with others. In the course of doing that I will also do some checking of references to see if we need to rephrase sentences a bit to avoid copyright issues mentioned in another section of the Talk page. How does that sound?PlanetCare (talk) 14:54, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Please do double check the paraphrasing. I realised I didn't check the lead, which needs to be fixed as it contains novel information not elsewhere in the article. I merged the Deforestation section sentence into another part of the article. The climate classification Section maps can simply be changed to images with captions. CMD (talk) 06:15, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- I have now inserted all the recommended Headings into the article, and some have sub-headings as well. I didn't introduce any new information: only moved paragraphs to what seemed like the right Heading. @Chipmunkdavis noted that the Lead mentions things that don't come up in the article. I think we could move some of the lead information into the appropriate Headings now. Once all the good information from current Lead is integrated into the article, we could then re-think what goes into the lead.PlanetCare (talk) 23:53, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
More Information Needed
[edit]More information is needed to cover the topic thoroughly. For example, "Emissions" is the very first heading, but it doesn't yet use any of the four recommended subheadings: energy consumption, transportation, industry and fossil fuel production. How is Kenya contributing to emissions based on its energy consumption? on its approach to transportation? and does Kenya produce any fossil fuels? (The article states that the manufacturing sector uses fossil fuels, but it's not clear whether Kenya produces fossil fuels.)
Under the Heading "Socioeconomic Impacts" it would be good to have more information for a sub-heading on "Impact on cities and urban areas" and also information for a sub-heading on "Impact on migration." There are other ways more information could be added to this article, but Emissions and Socioeconomic impacts are good places to start.PlanetCare (talk) 01:55, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
First paragraph?
[edit]Hello @Mmaua1 and everyone,
Good to see the article being improved but should the first 2 sentences be what you added at
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Climate_change_in_Kenya&direction=next&oldid=1115653289 ?
The first paragraph is now quite long - can it be improved? See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section Chidgk1 (talk) 11:39, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
