Height?

[edit]

The Encyclopedia of Melbourne states that the height of the Clifton Hill tower is 160 metres, yet this article claims 80 metres. Cnwb 23:42, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Heritage Victoria's website lists the height as 160 feet -- just under 50 metres. Whoever wrote The Encyclopedia of Melbourne entry has most likely made a mistake in transcribing this figure. If you go to look at the shot tower, it's clearly not 160 meters tall. 50 metres seems more in keeping with the height of other shot towers.

Response: I measured the angle to the top from the NE conrner of Gold and Alexandra at 20 to 22 degrees, using GPS phone ( a very cheap theodolite).Google Earth puts this distance at 176m along the4 ground. h = 176 * Tan(22deg) = 71M, 176 * TAN(20deg) = 65M.

Add another meter and a half for my eye height.

Both measurements are taller than the "around 160ft" (48.7m) referenced to Heritage Victoria.

So the tower does seem to be significantly taller than stated. Perhaps Linking Melbourne has measured it as part of their risk assessment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.35.135.168 (talk) 23:29, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
